Logs,
You would really not like what I would say to do here, so I will keep quiet. -
Question 10: How does compensation relate to on-duty time?
Guidance: The fact that a driver is paid for a period of time does not always establish that the driver was on-duty for the purposes of part 395 during that period of time. A driver may be relieved of duty under certain conditions and still be paid.
Good question I would ask someone and I will if I think about it tomorrow as this is a new question.
My guess is no you can be off duty! You are relieved from working with the trucking company. But I could be wrong so don't take that to the bank
Pay doesn't always mean you have to log it. This is civil duty so I am thinking no! Log it off duty
I swear its in the reg regarding jury duty somewhere can't find it gotta go get the kiddie
sorry didn't mean to double post go ahead ban me , i need to quit my addiction . l.o.l. kidding -
I can't really say whats the "correct" way, but if it were me, I would log OFF DUTY for this....
-
IMHO - Log for off duty. Unfortunately I cannot back that up with anything other than common sense. . .

Another way to look at this, if it is a job then the government is the employer. If the government is the employer than they have to pay minimum wage. I guarantee you that Florida doesn't even come close to minimum wage for jury duty.
Now if you have a union job the company may have to pay you for jury duty. If that is the case then you would have to log it on line 4. -
Choo-Choo - remember, the jury compensation rates were established a number of decades ago when $20 was a full day's wage (or more) for most people
Also, the government is not subject to its own rules.
Logs, oh light of my life.. my interpretation regarding that is that the trucking company may relieve the driver from duty, but still pay him. My thought is that it's aimed at layover pay or some trucking companies (that I might like to work for!!) who pay their drivers salary or some such.
I still think 395.2 Definitions - On-Duty Time sub para 9 will rule here.
Of course, I am not the professional log meister here. I will humbly bow to greater knowledge. -
Ok so I know what I am talking about but it takes all of us to teach others. The debates and discussions of not knowing helps teach others "old or new". so please I am no better at anything than any of you! HONESTLY!
What I do tell you is correct information or I will tell you I am not sure but here is the "common sense" of that scenerio and if you want to listen you listen but understand until I get facts don't ALWAYS listen to me
the Jury duty got me and I forgot to ask my boss today. busy day
Love you all -
Logs,
Face it. You're the professional log critic here. There may be others, but you are the only one I've seen here who admits it.
Me? I are still only am student trying to wrap damaged brain around parallel parking a semi.
So, sure, I can read the book. So can most of us. YOU, however, are on the admin end of things and are therefore more knowledgeable in the way [your] companies think of these things..
To paraphrase, an experienced field commander will almost always mop the deck when up against even the most knowledgeable butter-bar.
Of course, that doesn't prevent said butter-bar from trying
