I was going to go to Swift a few years ago, but decided to hold off. Basically, I did not want to be stuck in a contract , if I did not know how I would like the job.

The school district I work for will be purchasing a tractor soon, and they want me to drive it (mostly for the band . . . . instruments and stuff.). They bought a trailer last year, and it is all spiffy in school colors and logos. lol. With as much as the school uses the trailer, I will make up the money spent on CDL class within a year.

I am liking the way that the future is looking. One of my co-workers used to be a trucker for about 14 years, and he will more than likely be going with me on the trips, once I get my CDL A. He drives the trailer using a Ryder truck that the school rents, but the school wants more than one CDL A holder, and he does not want to drive most of the time. So in effect, I will be riding with a "trainer," I will get my schooling paid off, and I will be working at the same place I have been for the last seven years. It looks like a win-win.

So I was looking around, and found Sage. Are they any good?

Are they PTDI certified? I am asking this because, if I do plan on going into trucking at some point in time, and I want to make sure I have the full range of opportunities.

    Also anyone know pricing?

I will be starting at Sage in Kingman Arizona next week. Sage is ranked one of the top schools in the country. You cant go wrong by going there. They are also one of the only schools that has one on one training in the truck.
The cost for the school in Kingman is $4400 which includes everything. No other out of pocket expenses, and you get all of your endorsements.

PTDI certification is a pile of crap. The certification will not give you any more opportunities than a credible and well organized school without it.

I'm signed up to start with Sage as soon as I can get financing (est. Jan 2011). The Sage I am "with" is located at Mohawk Valley Community College in Rome, NY. I will be commuting to and from every day. I was quoted $4917.00 which is ALL INCLUSIVE of the requirements from classes right through and including testing, licensing, and the whole nine yards. Grant programs are also available through the Dept of Labor (something about a "599") and VESID (Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities). Wells Fargo and Sallie Mae are listed as places to get career training loans. Repayment terms are 3 to 5 years, deferred payments up to 3 months post graduation, disbursement date is 1st day of class. We have our mortgage with Wells Fargo and they have been AWESOME! My husbands prior school loan is with Sallie Mae and they are also a great company to do business with. Hope this helps for anybody who needed that information.

Just talked to an instructor who works at the Sage C1 in San Antone. Anyone have good/bad experiences? New to the industry (duh) and trying to get a full understanding. They say one on one is better. Has anyone gone thru their program and gotten hired by a good co?
    Thanks

Sage in San Antonio (China Grove, actually) is partnered with St Philip's College (one of our local Community Colleges www.Alamo.edu). They have two versions of the course - the 156 hour Rookie course for $4,255 and a 48 hour Refresher course for about $2,400 for previous CDL-A or CDL-B drivers. Being certified may not mean anything to drivers, but it sure seems to mean something to the companies. Are they any good? Companies don't waste time and money sending Recruiters to visit worthless campuses and Sage sure seems to have a lot of recruiting visits as well as some dedicated training contracts with companies like Core Mark, and Sangel.
I already had a Class-B with Passenger and School Bus, but went for the long course anyway. I'm in the middle of Sage's 156 hour course right now. Working on my 45 hours of training drives. I liked being able to use some of my military veteran's benifits (Texas Hazelwood Act) to pay part of the tuition through Sage's affiliation with St. Philip's.
Word to the Wise: If you already have a Class-B CDL, you'll need to the Combination test and your Class-A permit. However, why not put that Class-B to work in your favor by knocking out your HazMat and Tanker endorsements while you are working on your Class-A. That way your HazMat background check could be completed by the time you finish your Class-A. You'll still be required to have your Class-A before you can test for Doubles/Triples. Also, might as well get your Passport Card and TWIC card started as well. Then you'll graduate with all the marbles and be ready to work for anyone anywhere.

Almost forgot. At Sage - San Antonio all of your training drives (11 of them for 45 hours total) are one-on-one with Million-Mile Trainers. While you are waiting to start, talk to the office about when the recruiters are coming and sit in on the session. Maverick is coming on Thursday, 9 August. Don't know the time.

Ty Papa Bull. I start Sage monday Aug 13. I took my learners premit and passed. I decide to take the written part for my CDL license and passed the general test, but failed combanation, and Arit breaks. I din't know that sage doesn't teach you the CDL book. being that said, I am taking my written test again in the morning. keeping my fingers crossed that I pass before I start school.
