Hello, this is my first post, but I've been reading religiously for weeks.
I'm about ready to start a school (private or company sponsored) and I'm wondering if anyone would hire me if I go to a school that trains on automatics?
Id be learning how to maneuver the truck, but would be totally missing the shifting part of the education.
The school is $1500 compared to $5k+ for the others that use manuals.
Would I be wasting $1500 to go there? Will a company hire you on knowing they'll have to train you to shift? If that's a "small" thing for them to get past, that would be great because it would save me tons getting into the industry. But if it's just pipe dreams, I'd rather wait another couple of months and try to pay for the $5k school to learn the whole package.
And of course, there's the company sponsored Swift training here in town too... But I'd really rather attend an independent school.
Btw - I'm in the San Antonio, Tx area.
Thanks for any insight
-Justin

yes you can do that for 1500 hundred but shifting is easy to learn,Why dont you go on youtube and type how to shift on
ten gear or 13 and you will see alot of guys who are teaching for free.
Trust me youtube guys are much better than schools and Thats my opinion.Cat3TRD Thanks this. -
I would make sure your license does not have a restriction to not be able to drive sticks.
Switches, Cat3TRD and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
I've been watching the videos on there, even practicing in my car on my imaginary clutch/stickshifter.
I drove a standard car for years, and had no trouble with it at all. My first car was a standard.
I just wasn't sure if anyone would hire me. I guess an important thing I need to find out is what the dps tests on. I don't want my first experience to be at the actual CDL driving test.
Thanks for the rapid reply -
It's probably better that you learn to drive a manual transmission but $3500 is a lot of money. It might limit your options to get hired though. Just curious, who in San Antonio trains with just automatics. I've seen Road Masters over there and it "looked" like the guys were shifting gears.

Anyone can hire you as long as you dont have restrictions on your license, just make sure they dont put restrictions on your license

You should try and get finacial aide or a workforce grant they will help you pay dont limit yourself you will only regret it later on when you find better opportunities some companies what you can move to with experience want you to have stick experience. If all else fails use the 1500 to get a loan plenty of trucking companies give tuition rembursement which would payback your loan while you work good luck hope this helps.
