I am looking to get back in the truck after being away from the trucking industry for just over 10 years.
When researching driving schools in the Kansas City area, It kinda looks like the KCK Driving school, which I attended years ago, is no longer around.
I did a "drive by" of Apex CDL Institute in De Soto yesterday, and it appears to be a really nice training center, which has sparked my interest in this school.

Dose anyone have any thoughts on Apex, or any other Truck Driver Training Schools in the Kansas City area ?

    Thank You,
    Driver320.......

The best school around the Kansas City area and the whole state of Missouri is Metropolitan Community College in Independence Mo. One on One training. Used to be a PTDI certified school.

    Thanks for the replay Nuttin,

I will check them out. Looks like they have a 6 week program with 160 hours. I think I saw that the JOCO was sponsoring a 6 week Truck Driver Training program as well...options and options...
    Any thought on this??/ Anyone??

I have been out for quite awhile also. I have found some places that say they can hire me. But I havnt gotten to serious yet. How long did you drive before you stoped driving. I feel like I could jump in and go.

Its funny. It looks like they're using the same trucks. They have the same exact paint scheme. They're also using the same format of 1 on 1 training. The program looks to be 4250.

Curious as to what your opinion is based on? Have you ever attended Johnson County, Fort Scott....this other school Apex CDL Institute? Seems like you are making a very broad and uninformed statement if you havent attended any of the other schools in this guys area.

Your best option is to actually go out to the different schools and sit down and meet with someone. Take a tour of the facility. Find out what the training entails, how much behind the wheel time do you get. Ask about financial costs and options for financial aid or financing, look at their equipment, meet with some instructors.

Most importantly, ask about their job placement programs. See who they work with, what companies hire from them. Keep in mind, the job you get is what is what matters to you the most.

After you visit the schools, weigh your different options, then I would call the trucking companies that interest you and ask THEM who they suggest you go to for your training. Some guy off an internet message board is not qualified to advise you on career decisions like education and where you receive it. The company that plans on hiring you and paying your paycheck is more qualified to point you in the right direction.

I just went online and checked out the Johnson County and MCC program, they are both 6 week 160 hour programs and they are $4000-$4300. There are no financing options available. I looked at Apex and they are 165 hour, 3 week program. They say they have financing but I dont see the costs.

In the end, what matters is who gets you in class with the best financial options, gives you quality training, gets you your CDL and gets you the right job.

Community college programs are no promise of that.

I have been out of the truck since 2003, the last time I left trucking anyway....I just can't stay away from it.
Trucking is in my thoughts every day and night....It seems at times, I am simply waiting until I can get back into it, as if my local non-trucking "regular" job is just a break from trucking, although this last time has been a long break :biggrin_2556:

Because I have a few years experience, and I know what to expect and I will have no troubles jumping back into the trucking lifestyle, I am not looking for a 6 week program that is focused on total newbies, I am looking more at the
3 week accelerated programs, such as Apex, that appears to have strong ties with some of what I believe to be the "better" companies that hire new drivers, to place into their customized training programs.

Enough of me rambling.... any other thoughts and ideas????

    Thanks,

    Driver320

A 3 week course doesnt necessarily mean accelerated, it usually just means longer days. Looking online at Apex's class hours they run 6am to 6pm but they are still 165 hours. Same amount of training, less weeks to get it done in. You end up back to work quicker.

Twin Screws....Thank you for the reply..
I did see that the Johnson County Community College has the program and I think that would be a very good choice, MCC has theirs too...MCC used to offer skid pad training, however I am not finding it now on their course options schedule. Skid Pad training is really informative and FUN! The last trucking company I drove for set me to skid pad training/emergency evasive moves training..It was fun...

Apex charges 4000 dollars for their course, you really have to read into their website to find it, its not upfront in plane site like JOCO and MCC tuition is.
One thing I do like about the JOCO, MCC, and Apex, they all appear to be very structured and professional.
The last two times I attended truck driving school, in 1980 and 2002, it was very informal......I want to take the formal route this time...

    Keep the ideas flowing....
