I enrolled in (N)ational (T)ractor (T)railer (S)chool for a class which began on 9/8/14. I'm in the 18-week program (there are others in the same start class as I who are 10 and 5 week students). The training so far has been pretty good. The only complaint I have is that for my group as well as myself, we've found that we've had to create challenges for ourselves during maneuvers in order to keep it interesting -- we're almost at the end of the second week doing pre-trip inspection, drop & hook, and straight-line backing. We have almost one full week until testing. :| Other than that it's been exceptionally informative, such as I had no idea that tractors had cruise control.

I attended NTTS in Buffalo. 12 week course. Definitely one of the best trucking schools around. Many of the others offer 4-week 'crash n' dash' programs that leave a LOT to be desired. NTTS is also nationally accredited and has a great job placement record. I started with H.O. Wolding, to Conway, to JB Hunt to where I am now...Walmart, in just 6.5 years. And you'll be surprised what trucks are equipped with (depending on the company of course)...like our new 2015's have a fridge, heated and cooled drivers seat and yes...cruise. Happy trails. Recommend H.O. Wolding as they treat you great and have a very intense training program (obstacle course) and you're out with a trainer for a couple weeks as opposed to Swift's which is 8 weeks! They'll take what you've already learned, capitalize on it, and make you the best driver you can be. Its like truck driver bootcamp. It's worth it, and your next company will look favorably upon the fact that you drove for them as they have a good reputation, unlike Some others We might be Inclined to Forego in order To have the best possible future. Always best to start off with a company that nobody makes jokes about...

Best of luck and welcome to trucking.

I graduated NTTS Liverpool in November, good familiarization training as how to use the equipment and to get a student used to the shifting and how to handle entry level driving. One thing I would caution is do not listen to the recruiters do your homework, unlike nyvet I do not suggest H.O. but each person has their own experiences ( my friend who went with them 3 weeks ago is "still" broken down after 2 weeks of siting unpaid. among other issues) I've chosen U.S. Xpress so well see how that goes. but no one can expect 100% satisfaction right outta the gates. good luck to all who decide to drive

There is one reason to really justify NTTS, for the course cost and length of training: to get into a company that wouldn't take you right off the bat from a 3 week school. There are companies that will take you fresh out of NTTS that would ask others for 3 months experience with a company.

As far as large OTR carriers, NTTS makes it pretty easy to get on with Crete/Shaffer immediately. There are better companies out there, but Crete is a safe bet. Good training, good cooridination (that's important while new. Training at USX was a nightmare. I didn't know what was going on and neither did anyone else) and pretty close to the best pay you can get as a student. Yes, yes, there are plenty of ways to make more money than going with Crete, but they are essentially a safe bet out here. Be careful going with the small outfit that sold you on knowing your name instead of making you a number. You could be driving a dinosaur for crap pay like I did. Another tip. A small CPM bonus does not make the Northeast worth doing, unless you can't stomache leaving home for more than 6 days.

I graduated NTTS Liverpool September 2013. If I could go back, I'd go for paid company training. An 18 week course takes over 5 months really. That you pay 10 grand for while not earning income. I wish I'd gone with prime, heck, maybe even Swift. Since you are there already, my other regret was going to small regional place and then USX before Crete.
