I've narrowed down my oil leak on my 04 volvo ved 12 engine. It seems to be coming from a wiring harness that goes into the driver side rear of the cylinder head. It appears to be held in there with one bolt. Is there a seal there or what? Is this a common problem? Is there a good fix for it? thanks

Your picture is really small. How bad is this leak? It is hard to tell with that pic.

    IUFAN87 Thanks this.

The leak isn't too bad. It's just getting oil all over the starter. I'm more concerned with that than the actual leak. I ran the truck about 4000 miles and the oil level didnt go down any to speak of. I actually went to the Volvo dealership and asked them about it. They said there is a procedure they do thats about 5 hours labor where they clean the area of the leak and apply a sealer. It is apparently leaking where the wiring harnes goes through a grommet or something. Anyway they said if the sealer stops the leak its usually only good for about 6 to 12 months and starts leaking again. He said the only real fix is to replace the wiring harness which costs over 4000 bucks just for the labor alone........ouch! I can add a lot of oil for that much.

Honestly, oil leaks are about the biggest thing that seems to concern owners/operators and it is the most minor of problems. Unless you have a leak where you can see, drip, drip, drip, I wouldn't worry about it. Every engine leaks oil. Most leaks only cause an engine to look dirty, thats it. Just power wash your engine once a month and forget about it. I have seen a lot of customers pour $1000,s into their engine due to stupid oil leaks. I have a hard time understanding why someone would have half their engine torn apart and reassembled for something that is mostly cosmetic! Your engine isn't broken, it is going to sound the same, have the same power, mileage, parts, nothing is upgraded, you really aren't "fixing" anything! If I were you, I would save my money. Oil leaking all over the starter isn't anything to worry about. Starters do get warm, but not hot enough to start a fire or anything.

Thanks. I've been running down all of my leaks lately because they drive me nuts. This lets me breathe a little easier.
That said, I will change out a gasket this weekend if possible.

I agree. I have a series 60 detroit that always leaks from the oil fill tube o-ring. Runs down to the bottom of the pan and always looks messy. But, after replacing that twice, it leaks only a month or two later and just not worth the cost and aggravation. Plus, the leak never was noticeable on oil level.

I just get an engine wash every so often to get it nice and clean.

Yeah, that is exactly why I said I can add ALOT of oil before it would be feasible to "repair" the leak. When I first looked at the truck it was a pretty steady drip. The salesman said they tightened a sensor an dslowed the leak considerably. I couldnt tell the engine had been touched. So, I didnt really believe him. Anyway at this point after idlinfor 3 or 4 hours it "might" leave a two inch spot on the ground. Certainly not enough to warrant costly repairs. I've put approx. 3k miles on it since I changed the oil and havent had to add any.
Btw I used to sell auto parts and had customers bring in starters soaked in oil (inside and out) wanting them warrantied. The starters had obviously failed because of oil that got into them internally. That was my main concern for the starter on my truck. I still may rig somethin up to route the oil leak away from the starter if the leak gets worse.

A can of brake cleaner is a O/O best friend for those little dust collecting leaks. But like Heavyd said if it's not dripping or leaving a trail on the engine dont worry about it.

I spoke to a mechanic today who told me the problem with my oil leak is that the hole in the gasket will eventually get larger and cause all the oil to flow from the engine, possibly seriously damaging the engine or leaving me broke on the side of the road. I can actually smell the oil burning sometimes when it lands on the hot engine. The leak does appear small and i dont notice any loss of oil, but i am concerned. I have a cummins engine and the leak appears to be coming from the bottom front close to the fan. Any ideas???

Their is a small o ring that comes from a wiring harness... I was told 7 to 10 hrs to change it as you have to change the wiring also .... Then I was told a quick fix is silicone on the inside and out of a
cleaned area will work till you can afford it....
