md engines are cheaper for a reason
some have luck with them some dont--make sure all the recall updates have been done--they like to catch fire if not done
i was definately advised against them--but i am sure somebody could tell you their good pointsIntothesunset Thanks this. -
The company I worked for previously had many many of them and they were closely related to a big warm pile of dog doo-doo
Intothesunset Thanks this. -
Engine is light, and the displacement is bigger than other engines of different makes with similar weights.
Like was said, make sure recall updates were done. They tend to break down, but so does anything mechanical. I had one go bad and drove it home on a local run. Check engine light didn't come on. Fluids were ok, but something went in the head.
Most work must be done by a dealership as parts are captive compared to most of the other engines.Intothesunset Thanks this. -
I found a good deal on some freightliners with the Mercedes 12.8L 455 hp MBE 4000 he has 5 trucks under 600,000 miles for $14,000 all are 05-06
one has a bad cam for $5,000
So anyone else?

Mercedes 9067MTE 900 EGR
45K miles, fuel line broke ($800)
47K miles, second fuel line broke (Replaced all but one, $20 each, easy to fix)
65K miles, EGR cooler started leaking ($3800)
70K miles, Computer give false readings, ($3300)
Happy with the power and gas mileage, 9.8/gal pulling a 4 wheel drive Suburban -
Comparing a MBE4000 to a MBE900 is apples to oranges. The 4000 had head gasket issues and was eventually resolved but some had block deck damage from this that needed to addressed. The "engine brakes" are weak and not your typical design. Overall for their size I thought they pulled good and got decent fuel mileage....kind of a poor man's C12.
