I just bought a a International 9300 with a 475 cat. Im used to driving a Big cam Cummins I notice right away that the Cat pulls in the lower Rpms. With the Cummins I Had to keep it above 1800 Rpms sometimes down to 1600 depending on the grade my questin is how low can I go with the Cat before shifting and still not hurt the engine.

what year of truck is it? you can usually pull a cat down to 1100 1200 rpms with no problems. at least thats the way i will do with my 2000 3406E
-
I down shift my CAT at 1200 RMP. Cruise at 1350 RPM.
-
Both C15's I had, I'd drag them down to 1100, no problem.

your cats will pull just as good or better at the lower rpms. thats why they are high torque low rpm motors. if you check on the stats on the motor you will see it says max torque at 1200 i believe it is.

Just watch your exhaust temps.
-
yup good reply there rjones56. you have to keep an eye on the exhaust temps. if they start climbing to high you will need to drop a gear to bring them down.
-
##### my ser 60 det has to be up shifted at 1800 to grab next gear at 1500 it fall on it's face below 1400. rpm's take too long to drop when switching gears. never thought about the different types of engines & there shifting range. never drove any thing else than a detroit. I will say reving high may waste some fule, but is far better than lugging.

reving it high not only wastes fuel but can be hard on the engine. your not goin to gain anything by keepin it out of the max torque range.
