Wrench detroit 60 bubbles/pressure in coolant.is it head or egr?

i had bought an 2004 century freightliner(shneider truck)with the detroit 60 in it.bob-tailed home for 1000 miles had no over heating no problems.when i got home i checked the truck to find out that the radiator resevoure bubbles with pressure at 1000 rpm cold...pressure gauge tester shows up to 20psi withing a minute of running. thank god the 15-psi radiator cap was working right on the way home.im getting white smoke on a cold start up for a minute then it clears up,and im getting that pressure too thats releasing out the drain hose...what is the problem with my truck???some mechanics tell me its the head other say egr others say thermostat, water pump...what do you guys think???help

Head gasket is gone, or you have a cracked head. Do an oil sample and stop running it before you spin the main bearings due to antifreeze contamination of the oil.

You're going to have to get it to a shop and have them test it. Mind you they will more than likely have to pull the head to tell if it is the gasket or the head itself.

ddec v heads cracked on the intake port side souldn't build pressure unless under boost, head gasket with build pressure anytime running, head gaskets usually fail due to a failed counterbore.also possible egr cooler leak, need to pressure test cooling system.haven't ever seen a 1 cyl,air compressor fail that way yet.

thanks guys for the advice...i already checked the air compressor thats not the problem with the pressure in my coolant.so thats eliminated from the problem..my next step is to check the egr cooler by disconecting the pipes for the inlet outlet of the exaust or maybe by-passing the the egr cooler and connecting the coolant hoses together to see if i still have bubbles in my coolant.if i disconect the the exaust pipe from the cooler for this test, which pipe should i disconect:the gas delivery pipe or the s-pipe???once the egr cooler is checked,if alls good, then i move on to the heads and thats where the real work begins...i hope its not the heads but if it is,it is what it is,and im not going down with out giving it my best shot...its a cruel world if you want something done you got to do it yourself...
(anyone have a step by step repair manual to guide me thru removing /installing the head and also guide me in doing an in-frame motor job)if someone can email me this or tell me where i can find it on line i would realy appreciate it...

i was thinking the same things your describing...saturday im disconectint the egr cooler exaust inlet and checking to see if that stops the coolant pressure...i might even take the cooler off and take it to the radiator shop for a pressure test submerged in a tank of water...thanks for the advice...im praying thats the problem,i cant afford a head job/motor job at this time...i would end up having to do the job myself and im kinda lost when it comes to diesel engines...

if you pull the egr valve off and look in the cooler you can see moisture and burnt coolant if the egr cooler is leaking .you can also leave the egr valve off for a few hours and start it up with it off to see if you get white smoke from the exhaust,if you still have smoke your head or head gasket is the problem.make sure the oil feed line is capped off.you can also remove the intake manifold and look into ports to see traces of coolant if the head is cracked.

yesturday i dissconected the exaust s pipe the runs from the engine exaust to the egr cooler and i also dissconnected the egr gas delivery pipe that runs to the intake manifold...when i started it i saw less bubbles then before and i tiny bit of foam.i ran the engine at 1000 to1100 rpm and turned the engine off with out bringing the rpm down and the coolant cap was off at the time so when i turned it off the coolant over flowed about a 3rd of a gallon.i should of turned the rpm down before turning off the motor...im gonna bring the rpm down today when i turn off the motor to see if it over flows again..today im puting the coolant i lost and starting it agin to see if theres bubles and im doing a pressure test on the radiator resevoire.i may even buy a compression tester today(the kind with the green die in the vile that you put over the radiator resevoire and the color of the die is suppose the change colors if theres compression...
