I'd Like an Explanation.....
From Mary Nichols and CARB....
The EPA and...
The engine manufactures.....
Using the EGR degrades fuel mileage.....
It also creates more soot.....So then we had to have the DPF added to remove the soot caused by employing the EGR systems.....
So....Please explain what benefit does the EGR provide again?
Btw...My rig has to go into the shop again....Within a 8 day period.....Again....To replace an EGR valve that was replaced 8 days ago...

Also.....
The EGR failed at 200K.....
That's still covered but the VGT is not....
A bad EGR system will damage a VGT.....Like $3600 worth of damage....
If my rig wasn't still under warranty....I would remove the EGR and the DPF and tell CARB to go eff themselves!!!!! -
Now Ron, wern't you recently arguing in a thread that all the emission stuff is good, should not be messed with, and serves a great purpose to humanity and the earth?
DrtyDiesel and Big Duker Thank this. -
It is amazing how this all plays out.
The original idea behind EGR on the engine was to displace some of the nitrogen/oxygen atmospheric air and cause a reduction in the in-cylinder temperatures and therefore a reduction in NOx (oxides of nitrogen). That, of course, created less efficient burns and more soot.
So, since more soot, now we needed a DPF to catch all those soot particles.
Now we come to SCR and the DEF fluid requirements. That is what they should have went to in the beginning instead of EGR. It takes care of the NOx so that the EGR can be dialed back. I have no idea why they haven't just eliminated the EGR on SCR equipped engines by now. Go figure.
But it has created a situation where less soot is generated in-cylinder, so the DPF regens should be farther apart.
Either way, it is real costly for all this stuff and as Commander Scott of Star Trek fame said in one of the Star Trek movies...."the more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain".
So I recently ordered a glider truck with a pre-emissions engine. I just don't have the excess cash and fortitude to play games with all this junk. -
While your talking to those know it alls in Washington and Sacramento.....Ask them why they can't just have trucks run on propane and do away with those diesel engine killing emission cleaning junk they run on these newer trucks!

Good summary!

SCR (DEF) really solves EGR issues, becouse with SCR less exaust gas is used, so less soot.
'
There were SCR engines w/o EGR, but they use more DEF per gallon of fuel -
I guess I am wondering how using more DEF would be a downside compared to EGR dumping engine feces back into the cylinders, along with that many more sensors and parts that fail. I would be willing to take the increased DEF solution if I had to have the emissions junk. It would indeed be nice if we had the option. Being able to modify and tune the engine for maximum performance and fuel mileage would more than offset any additional DEF cost.DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
The more fuel you burn the more tax they collect. These political decisions with the touchy feely overtones always end up making someone connected rich while the rest of us pay.
