Schools teach you to double clutch and most, if not all, states want to see you double clutch to get your license. What I am curious about is if one is a better method of shifting than the other. I know that double clutching will obviously put more wear on your clutch, but aside from that, if both are done properly, is one better or worse for the overall health of the transmission. Or maybe it really does not matter.

my opinion as a mechanic/driver, floating when done correctly is best overall for all components in the drivetrain. just my .02, been floating for a long time never had a trans problem.

my students are required to double clutch till they can listen to their truck, this takes about two weeks for them to get comfortable enough and remember the gear patters to shift. after that point i put them in the passenger seat and have them tell me when i should shift.(i float) this gives them time to hear what they are suppose to be listening for. the engine whine the turbo growl and the rpms rev at the right time. then i ask them to start floating gears. in the city they end up double clutching only because they get flustered with the traffic and the stop and go of it all. i have had to have my clutch reajusted only once since last year and that was because i could not get the guy to put his dang boot on the floor.

NSBGearjammer, thanks for the welcome. I really like this forum because of all the useful information here and great people too. I still haven't figured out how to use the forum search tool but I'll just have to fiddle around some more.
WhiteWinterRose, I wish I had an instructor like you when I went to school to get my license, would have made things way better. And thank you all for the replies and the help. -
Use the Google custom search in the upper right hand corner and click SEARCH. Search term would be FLOAT DOUBLE CLUTCH. My .02, I learned both in school and prefer floating(esp. Super 10). Company policy and your ability are the two biggest considerations. Remember- If you can't find it, Don't grind it! You're RPMs or MPHs are wrong.

After 36 years ....I'd probably have a hard time double clutching
snowblind Thanks this. -
I have taken a "hybrid" approach to shifting over the years. There are circumstances where I will float. There are circumstances I prefer to double clutch. I guess each has his own feel for it.

I probably won't succeed double clutching now if I try. I left it at driving school. Learned to float up and down the range in a first year of my career. I drove mostly the same truck engine/tranny combo over my years, that helps too.

i float so much better than i double clutch and i tell my students that as well. i have nothing to hide. i seem to miss every time when i go to double clutch. lol
