I am looking at buying an autoshift, any opinions?
I had one long time ago and it seemed as they couldn't figure out how to backup!could figure out how to slip the clutch

I had an auto shift and after awhile I could back it so smoothly that when I backed into the trailer all you could hear was the sound of the fifth wheel locking. Other guys sounded like they were in a demolition derby. If you want more control then get a three pedal ultrashift.

I don't thnk the 3 pedal models are even available anymore on new equipment. The latest Ultrashift is called an UltrashiftPlus. It's a two pedal model w/no clutch pedal. It's smooth as butter, at least when new. Put it in gear and absolutely nothing happens until you step on the throttle, and then it just gently moves off like the best driver you've ever seen. Pretty incredible, actually.

The I shift from Volvo is the best in my opinion. I had one in a 2011. Truck was another story. I also have driven an 07 and an 09 with the Ultrashift. They are ok and I would probably buy one again. You can't beat them in heavy traffic.

I test drove one today. US+ 18 in a 587. I liked it, but upon talking with the mechanics I ran the other way...FAST!

I do believe Volvo is the only company that seems to have perfected it at least in terms of reliability. Their Ishift is pretty amazing

What negatives did the mechanics have to say about it? I know they've had some x-y shifter problems in the past but they're now offering a standard comprehensive 500,000 mile warranty with extra warranty available if you want it. The advantage to the Eaton, at least as I see it, is the basic transmission is absolutely bulletproof - its a regular 18 speed manual - with a standard 2 plate ceramic clutch the controls of each being electronically controlled by an ECU and electric motors. I know the older models with the centrifugal clutch were bad, but I see no reason that these new ones can't be as good as Eaton claims they are. Heck, if they can electronically control an engine, controlling a clutch and a couple of shift rails should be childs play.. -
