Can someone school me on the C16? It is a 3046E correct? I know they have 600hp and over 2k tq but I dont see alot of them or hear alot about them. Are they bad motors? I know you can get a c15 with 625 but how do they compare to the c16?

Don't know the history and will be curious to find out. I think the C-16 was given up around 03 due to the new restrictions. Not sure if that's true or not. Eitherway, I know they were considered monsters in the mid to late 90's.

The C16 started as the 3404E 15.8L, the block, head, injectors are the same as the C15.
The bore and stroke are different as well as ECM thats all.
When the twin turbo came out they only wanted to make one engine so they took the crank out of the C16 and that made the engine a 15.2L with a higher compression of 18:1.
That is a very very brief outline.
I think the C15 is a better motor as the only way they can increase the bore size but stay with the same block is to make the liners thinner and this is where the problems start with the C16.
    This is only my opinion:biggrin_25525:

So more than likely your better off to stay away form the c16 and go with the c15?

Yes, talk to Mr Haney you can get a easy 650hp out of a C15 safely with no liner trouble.
Also the turbo is different,I like my engine but have had major trouble with liners.

    NFDDJS Thanks this.

I cant wait for someone to come up with 5.4 low compression pistons that can be used with the 16 liter 6.75" crank. Imo, that would make a great motor?....:biggrin_25514:

The C-16 is as good a motor as any C-15, now we also have the C15 Acert.

Here's a history lesson the first 3406E Model engines had a Cubic Inch displacement of 890CI or 14.6Liters in size this engine was introduced in 1994. The 964 CI or 15.8Liter 3406E Model engine was introduced in the last part of 1998. The 14.6L engine had a power range from 335 Hp to 550 Hp. The 15.8L engine was from 575 Hp to 600 Hp. In 1999 CAT changed the electronics system to the newer design that's used in the C-15 and C-16, but still called them 3406E Models, because they didn't change the block structure or the way it seals at the gaskets. In 2000 CAT made quite a few changes to the block structure for better sealing of gaskets, with these changes they changed the name of the engine to reflect the liter size, hence the names C-15 and C-16. These engines were built until Sept. 2002 when the new emission standards came into effect. The C-16 was dropped at this time and the C-15 continued until the first C15 Acert was released to the public in 2004. The C-16 is a great engine and can build tremendous amounts of torque when modified for power, but they all have the same issues...........liner protrusion and liners settling if the protrusion isn't correct. Either of these motors can be modified for huge amounts of horsepower with great results.........the C-16 will build a considerable difference in torque in a modified version than a C-15, but the horsepower seems to be very close to each other.

The new C15 Acert is a hybrid of the C-15 and C-16, it uses basically the same stroke as a C-16 with the smaller bore of a C-15 to be a 15.2L engine in size.

    As always, thank you Kurt!
I am most likely wrong here so please correct me...
I thought i read somewhere that the 15.2 acert pistons were high compression pistons?
When rebuild time gets here, i would like to stuff a 6.75" 16 liter crank into my 2WS, and keep the 5.4" bore, if possible.
As always, look forward to more from you...:biggrin_25514:
