    Dump truck weight...?

    Hello all I have a 2005 Mack granite tri axle dump. It has an all steel 16ft long ox-body bed and steel wheels 24.5. My truck is pretty heavy about 27000 pounds fueled up. GVW in my state for this truck is 70000 pounds. I have been offered a new aluminum dump bed at a steal of a deal but have no clue what the difference in weight would be between an all steel 16ft bed and all aluminum 16 ft bed anyone have a clue?

    The aluminum bed will for sure be lighter, but it can't haul some things a steel bed can haul.

    What type of work are you planing to do with this truck? That will determine what type of bed you need.

    27,000lbs aint that heavy for a tri axle dump. A lot of tri axles weigh 29,000+. If sand, stone, gravel,and black top are your normal loads buy all means get the aluminum. If you haul demo, rip rap, construction debris, or bolders then the steel is definetly better.

    yea thats not all that heavy i have a freightliner tri and its 25000 but i looked at a alum. bed truck but your not going to be able to use it on all jobs rip rap will put holes it it forsure as will broken sidewalks thats why i choice the steel easy to repair but there when you need it.. i have hauled 5'x8'long and 8" thick cement dut from hwy 40 and they put pins in it to load and had no problems but i would be on the edge with alum. and that load of cement paid alot by the hr i would have to work about 8 hrs on normal jobs to make what was made in a few hrs...just take a long look at the type of work you do and go from there...good luck mike..

    oh i wish we could haul 70000 legal here in nc its only 62/65000..

    I drove a 2000 RB Mack with a 16 ft. R&S aluminum bed. EMPTY WEIGHT 24,200 pounds.

    27,000 pounds is about normal on a Mack with a steel bed.

    So to answer your question you should be approx. 3000 pounds lighter with an aluminum bed.

    I had a ten wheeler that weighed 32K...
    Was one tough SOB. It was a heavy speced truck. 20/58/double frame/12.00X24/heavy body, etc...
    But the best part was the KTA... 1000 extra pounds there...
    Dont see trucks built like that anymore.

    Our RD688S Mack quad axles only weighed about 24 - 25k, with aluminum beds. Of course, they needed to be light, seeing as they were rather short compared to other makes of dump truck. As stated above, NC doesn't like the idea of letting you haul actual weight in a dump truck.

    with a aluminum bed you might drop 1,000 to 1,500 lbs unless you have a super heavy bed and getting the lightest aluminum bed there is, just to give you an idea the aluminum bed on my T800 is only about 400 lbs lighter than the steel bed on my 378 which happens to be 18 inches longer.

    stay away from aluminium it is very sensitive on stones and things like this also problematic if you need haul asphalt , and alu due heat expands and this is problematic

    so hardox is best choice

    we had mercedes 6x4 22600lbs this include 15.1L v8 engine , 16speed syncro gearbox 6.5inch draiveshaft double chassis , hub reduction axles , full tank , steel rims , it was 3side tipper from steel but just with ALU sideboards , also steel cab ......


    and have similar truck but with all steel tipper body and this was 24250
