heavy(1000 pounds heavier than the 15L motors) and expensive to work on.If you have a heavy foot, mileage sucks.Get past the previous, they are a great motor...:biggrin_25514:

I saw KTA 19 in russin fat trucks. Engine is huge, very high low end torque, so huge engine that destrois manuals and that's why truck makers use huge and expencive allison trannies.
But really D16, Merc OM502, C15/16 and ISX15 may do the same job, a bit slower, but with realistic fuel milage, realistic maintanace cost and realistic parts avalability.
Correct me if I wrong, but KTA19 got no highway sertificat in CIS and can be used on off road trucks only that may ride on public roads with special permit only (usually with overweight and oversize load).

For the little I know about them, they are capable of big power and mpg's depend on application and driving style. Parts are expensive but somewhat easy to get since they have been used for boats and equipt. since they stopped putting them in otr trucks in 1984. They also share parts with the QSK motor which is updated version of kta.

They have individual heads for each cylinder so there is bound to be some head problems due to the movement. Depending on HP rating it could have pistons in it that are prone to cracking. All in all not a bad engine.

If you want to see what parts cost just get the serial number and call cummins and price the injectors, bearings, gasket sets, and a turbo. I would suggest too, that do to the way that engine is built I would not use anything othe than genuine cummins parts.

IMO, KTA-19 is outdated engine. It was designed for 500-700 HP output but really there are ISX 15 650HP, Scania V8 700 HP, Volvo D16G 700 hp. Now high end road engines got the same output with highway truck fuel milage.

Really there are new huge engines used on fat trucks, like QSK, MTU V12 engine (titan trucks), big CATs....

KTA 19 in MZKT truck (60 ton grs.w with trailer) burns over 70 l/100 km on highway, Volvo FH16 does this job with 40-45 l/100 km.

Individual heads are to prevent head problems. No blown head gaskets and dropped liners like single head Cats and others.

But anyway, fuel mileage sucks like with any other oversize engine, more cubics = more fuel.
