Im currently studying for my CDL permit test, and am curious, what is the most common type of brake system on semi's? I know the Wedge style brakes are from the older trucks, but as far as drums/S-cam, or disk brakes? This particular question hasnt come up yet in my studying, however the question is there in my mind, specially since disk brakes are becoming more popular due to the stopping power over drum brakes.

And what is the effectiveness of one over the other on trucks these days?

By far s cam drum brakes are the most common. I don't know about the disc brakes except that they tried 'em years back and they had problems. I've heard that they have new disc brakes out now but I don't know anyone who's running them.

Most common in this country is drums with s-cams. Other places are using more disk brakes.

Even the new 2014s we are running are drum brakes.

I saw a Utility trailer with disc brakes, the actuators go across instead of fore and aft. I have heard all kinds of things, but drums are still here.

s-cam drum brakes. My buddy works for Hirschbach. He drives 2014 prostar with bendix disk brakes. Designed to hold more heat and quicker stopping distance.

I've been wondering about this myself. Nobody buys a car with drum brakes nowadays, unless they are pinching pennies. But, drums are the norm with trucks. Looking at the Peterbilt and East trailer websites for example. Disc brakes are an option on most products, but I wonder how many people opt for them.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with disc brakes on rigs or trailers ?

I have disc brakes on truck and trailer.
With EBS (ABS is allready fased out in a lot off countries but not yet in US)
Stopping distance is MUCH shorter and locking up the wheels is nearly impossible.
Brakes fading due to excessive heat is nearly impossible.
Would never go back to drums.

Disk brake better if u don't drive on snow or rainy day, they are going most likely to be malfunction.

the ABS sensors are another thing to worry.on the good sides, they stop the truck much betterand don't require much of adjustment
