Bought a 1998 Int. with Detroit 60 12.7 truck has 1.55 mil on it. Not sure how many are on the engine or the components of the engine.
After an oil change 2 days ago. (this may or may not be related) I drove 70 miles to my pick up and when I got out with truck idling the engine was making a noise. It sounds similar to a vehicle with low power steering. A low whining or growling. I jumped back in the truck and tapped the accelerator a few times and it speeds up and slows down with the engine. I walked in front of the truck to open the hood and it was loud there like its at the front of engine... BUT WAIT. After opening the hood and listening all around both sides it seems louder on the passenger side and not quite at the front, maybe around the cylinder 2 area or turbo. Turbo seems to sound fine when spooled. This is listening with no tools just naked ear.
Turned on the AC no change, Doesn't seem to be coming from alt. If I rev truck hard a few times and let it come to idle it seems to fade just a bit or all the way for a few seconds.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance

Oh, forgot to mention.
It doesn't seem to make the noise when I start it cold, only after its good and warm -
Gear whine from bullgear? I'd take it to a detroit mechanic before it blows.

Start with the process of elimination, remove belts one at a time to see if noise goes away. If not, next place, pull intake tube from turbo and inspect for excessive end play or up and down movement (some up and down movement is normal) if not there, make you a homemade listening device, like a wooden dowel rod or wooden broom handle, hold one end to different places on engine(water pump-right side accessory drive etc.) and encircle the other end with your hand and hold it directly against your ear. This will magnify sounds (redneck stethoscope). If you are still unable to pin down location, remove r/s acc drive and inspect bearings etc- also while you got it out check out your bull gear for excessive movement, gear teeth damage etc. Lots of possibilites for that kind of noise.
Willmann30 and Smellfunny Thank this. -
sounds like accessory drive.BeenJammin has the right idea.good luck.

Accessory drive, bull gear, fan hub. Could be many things. Most things make a whining noise can cause a lot of damage when they let loose. This is something that needs to be looked at ASAP.
Do as BeenJammin said to narrow it down. -
Bull gear bearing! Something getting ready to sling all apart!

OK, Today I got a chance to check it with a wooden dowel rod (flag pole) working with what I have available. The noise seemed louder with it on the drivers side, on block. cylinder 2 area... Crazy I know.
My first thought when starting post was the bull gear. Didn't want to let on and lead people there. But after today I'm a bit confused. I took video with phone moving it around to different areas to see if I could pull anything out with it. I can hear it in the video but its more a background noise and never changes with phone movement.
I will definitely take it to a tech first chance I get this week. Hopefully it doesn't let me down before then. -
Also Thanks to everyone helping so far.
And I know
Something getting ready to sling all apart!
