Wow, I was surprised to see that we are now using 5W30 in Class 8 engines now!

Anyone here plan on using 5W30? Does anyone know if older engines would be able to use this?
5W30 for big trucks now?

I know a bunch of guys running it and we run it also with no problems but I still run 15w40 amsoil and it is good stuff.

They've been eyeing 5w30 for a while now and it may be mandatory in the future to reduce emissions on new trucks. The engine makers will likely have to pay closer attention to bearing clearances.

Truth is, older engines would probably be ok with it, but know one has tested it for a million miles +. Continue at your own risk. Personally im sticking with 5w40 fully synth t6

Of course they want to sell their oil and they'll do anything to get you to buy it.
Personally I stick with the manufacturer's suggestion. Oil weights operate at different temperature ranges. The way trucks run you need an oil with a wide range. -
Since july 2007 when I bought my truck new(Volvo 780/ 2008,Volvo D13 ) ,i use only synthetic 5W40 oils ,Shell Rotella T6 and sometimes Mobil 1 ; i have 1,274,000 miles original motor, still working great with all the DPF and EGR flow ; In Europe are using even lower viscosity
0w40 oils in heavy trucks; Years ago was too expensive ,now i buy from Wall Mart,Meijer for 18-23$ /gal( i need 9 gal) and have my mechanic do the oil change, i don't trust bulk synthetic and noobs technicians from lube shops.
