alternator

    Hi, got a question on alternator, my brother has 07 columbia and there is this wire which goes from pos bolt to one of the extra bolts on the alternator? Now i have 05 columbia but no wire? Does anyone know what's it for. Thx

    That is the "remote sense" terminal. It is optional. The picture you provided is actually showing it wired incorrectly. The remote sense is a voltage input directly from the batteries so the alternator can sense the actual voltage at the batteries and increase output voltage if necessary. Many trucks have several cable connections between the alternator and batteries. There may be voltage loss across that cable distance and connections. The alternator will put out a little bit more to compensate for the voltage drop to the battery. The remote sense is supposed to be wired with a single 18 gauge wire directly to the batteries, not a short jumper like that. That is actually useless the way they have it there. I doubt it is factory. Probably someone installed and just followed the supplied instructions and did not run a wire direct to the batteries.
