Ok, so I have been driving for USX for a little over a month. I was hired out of an area that required me to team drive out of training for 8 weeks. When I upgraded they had no one for me to team with that lived near me so they seated me to a truck solo and thats how I ran for the first 3 weeks out. I had no issues. I made every pickup and delivery on time early. So last Tuesday I came off home time heading south and 4 hours into my trip I get a phone call from this guy whom says he is my new team driver and where was I and when would I be picking him up. Blew me away. I thought I dodged a bullet when they sent me solo. So I call my FM and he confirmed so I delivered and got a run going through tunnel hill to pick him up. Now first off this guy speaks english with a really broken accent and it makes comunicating difficult but I can work through that. Secound he is not a smoker and I am. 2Nd red flag...but if hes ok with it then okwith me. So I finish my run and now its his shift. Let me tell you guys, I though I just was permoted to trainer. This guy drives like he just started truck school. He cant shift even double cluching he needs alot of work. He is not proficient in anything, map/trip planning, lane changes, reading signs, managing grades, planning his breaks (time management). Its like he never went with a trainer and he was out with one for 6 weeks. I expressed my concerns with the team corrodinator, my FM, my former training corrodinator, and my FM and have recieved only a brush off from the team corrodinator. Not a peap from anyone else. I do not feel safe sleeping with this guy behind the wheel. So now I amin a pickle of a situation. I spend most my off duty time helping him do his job and Im getting little rest and no one seems to care. I need this job and dont want to start over with another CO. But I feel like I have to get out before something bad happends! I think it is unjust they are making me team at all but worse they are indagering my life. I know What will have to be done but just needed to vent.

Change companies. It's your life and if you're not satisfied there, change companies. Check with some companies that don't require teams other than a short training period.

    Melton Truck Lines
    Ozark Motor Lines
    Paschall Truck Lines
    Ryder
    Navajo
    NFI
    A. Duie Pyle
    USA Truck

If you search you can find plenty more that will hire you. Some of these I listed are from fair to excellent.

Do you have tanker/hazmat endorsement? If so there are several other choices. Living in CT there is probably some coast-to-coast reefer outfits running produce from the West Coast to NYC and other Northeast cities.

    1. Stay the hell away from USA Truck. They were the first company I drove with after getting my CDL. My 2nd driving shift, my trainer opened the curtain, threw his log book at me, and told me to keep driving, then went back to sleep.

    2. The OP's 2nd seat sounds a lot like a cuban guy I flunked during phase 2 training @ CRE (how he passed phase 1, I'll never know). Dude treated the gps like a Bible, even when signs and landmarks contradicted it.

Welcome to training my friend. I wouldn't suggest going to another company its too early. You will learn a lot being a big brother to a newbie. You never know. Ya'll might be the bestest of friends.

But I am not a trainer. I am new myself. I dont mind training, but I am not getting paid to train. I also dont mind mentoring the guy, if he could at lead have enough independance to handle the truck safe long enough to sleep. But we are being ran as a team. We have loads that need to be ran and not fall behind. This guy either was not trained good or did not retain what his trainer taught him. I feel he needs more training and I would be fine doing it if I was getting paid for it and given the ability to use my on duty time in the jump seat. My trainer made sure I could run the truck all by myself with all the skills needed before taking me to upgrade. He needs to have the same skills before being on a team. Thats my opinion.

He didn't kill his trainer in 6 weeks. He's not going to kill you. This is a good experience for you. Stick it out for four weeks and you are home free. If you quit you will be starting over.

Ok Vinsanity, say I suck it up and deal with it. Should I talk to my FM about schedualling so we can Run with extra time? And is that even an option. I see your point about him not killing his trainer but dont you think its a little unfair to me to risk late deliveries, running a weigh station, or an accedent. I say this because these are all things that would have happend if I had been in sleeperbirth and not in jump seat. You dont think if he needs more training he should be with a trainer whom has been trained to train. Just some questions I though I should ask.

LOL your title and pay may not be trainer status. But my friend. You are a trainer. Plus the guy is just as nervous as you .Maybe he will do a little better in a few days. Oh by the way. What is double clutching?? lol
