I would request a refund and tell them if they want to put the old parts back on the truck they can. If no responce then call Volvo Corporate and make a complaint. If they performed unecessary work that didn't fix the fault you do have legal recorse. Write a letter to the dealer service manager and ask for a good faith gesture and state if you can't come to an agreement you will take legal action against them. Too many O/O don't standup to a dealership when they get it wrong. Being firm and being polite normal gets results.
i recently had a dealer charge $1500 over the estimate. I refused to pay it, saying you can't go beyond the agreed estimate without me authorizing it. In the end I paid the original agreed estimate and they ate the $1500. Which really ment I got the parts at cost and just paid for labor.

Englishman you are right to a certain extent there should be more people standing up to dealer the problem is that when he does call the manager first thing out of their mouth is going to be the ECM was bad and they will stick to their story unless someone can prove them different without the old ECM no one can so therefore it might just turn out to be a waste of time but I do agree with the point you make about standing up to the dealer they perform to many unnecessary repairs and in the end of the day they end up throwing parts on instead and properly diagnose a problem. I work for a small shop in Chicago we have all different ECM from old engines as good test parts I can't believe that a dealership could not do that. It really sucks how dealer techs work man there is way to many nightmare stories even worse that this one here.

Since the repair I have no more codes or issues. Having said that I spoke to service manager at Gabrielli Volvo and he told me alternator aside my ECU was bad. Based on what I found afterwards I don't know what to think but I have no way of proving them wrong without the old ECU which I think they sent back.
On the flipside these guys are the only Volvo dealer in the Ny metro area. The carrier I haul for does a ton of business with them and if I get into with the service manager I could wind up standing out in the cold the next time this thing craps out.Mlaz Bogdanci Thanks this. -
Ok now I have another code popping up. Mid128 Sid281 fmi7. I can clear it and truck seems to run ok. Any suggestions?

I have a question about my 2003 volvo vnl, my cluster showing low voltage 11.8 - 12.2, while my brand new alternator and batteries showing 14.2, in the mean time I have a little digital reader that reads my voltage out of a ciggarette lighter, its giving me 14.2 on idle and 12.9 with key on, can anyone please help me with this issue, why is my dash giving me 11.8 - 12.2 on idle when my actual voltage is 14.2
Thanks.

Had exactly same problem .. dashboard was showing multiple bad injectors..
first it was loose screw on alternator , second time it was alternator itself
either not charging or getting stuck under the belt ..
if alternator doesnt turn or gets stuck in volvo D12 engine you can see some burned rubber dropping on the top of the chassis frame
(driver side by power steering box)
