Volvo FH Conversion of 6X2 chassis to 6X4 using Rockwell / Meritor rears

    I am contemplating removing Volvo FH13 480 & 520 bogeys (6X2) and replacing them with air ride Rockwell 6x4 double drive differentials with a ratio of 4.56. I have an experienced chassis guy so the cutting and welding of the chassis is not a problem. The Volvo uses an I-Shift gearbox. Are there any incompatibility problems that I am likely to pick up from a mechanical or electronic perspective? Any comments?

    really u have to reprogram ECAS and EBS to 6x4 ( ore swap EBS unit and rear modulator with 4s/4m comfiguration)

    and install brake pad wear sensors emulators

    Thank u Pablo, you are always spot on. My Rockwell rears have drum brakes and are mechanical so there is little chance of putting in disc lining sensors and this will probably cause issues with the brake ECU. Can I do away with EBS and how do do the ECAS & EBS reprogramming? I have just bought VCaDS 2.35 and I am still learning the basics.

    Why replace the 6x2 with 6x4?

    Go have a look what DAF have done to install the Rockwell twin diffs in their CF and XF range in SA.
    I think you could get some ideas there.

    I'm guessing he has 6x2 used imports from Europe that he is running between South Africa and other African countries.The law here is that your combination weight can only be 5 x what you have loaded on drive axles.The law here is 9t on an axle so you can only get 45t gross with a 6x2.With the std 3 axle trailer that cuts almost 5t off what you can do with a 6x4.With a B double/interlink it cuts 11 ton from allowable gross train weight.

    I run into Zim & Zambia and the roads are not the best so sometimes there are traction issues with 6x2 trucks especially mid lift. Also the mid-lift air suspension can be a nightmare the older it gets especially the valves that are quite pricey. The wheel base as well... the braking pads... I could go on and on. I have no problems though on my rear lift 6x2's

    I am actually just down the road from Babcock DAF in Benoni and i have had a look at the CF and XF 6x4 range with the Paccar (kenworth) 8 air bag suspension system in single reduction format. It looks great & promises a lot of driver comfort air ride but I want the simplicity and ruggedness of the Eagle 9800 Rockwell bogey. My biggest worry is probably whether or not I-Shift features such as Eco roll will still work (they should but you never know) and also what that will do to my fuel consumption given that in theory the Volvo engine and gearbox will have been optimized around the Volvo rears.

    look at brake lines wiring diagram and u can see how different are 6x2 and 6x4 trucks
