it is best not to do a long idle. Just turn it off when your resting.

Idling is not needed nor is it recommended due to several factors including accelerated engine wear and excessive fuel consumption among other things. But, if you are going to idle then it is best to keep the operating temp as close to normal as possible. This helps by providing a more complete combustion of fuel to minimize fuel wash down and soot buildup.

IF you have a Volvo motor, they were made to be efficient and run at low RPM's with out causing the issues mentioned. You will still burn fuel, you will still have engine wear. But the engine will adjust so it stays warm when idling and doesn't have to over fuel anything. I think this goes for saying for any engine today.

Just remember that any of these engines nowadays shouldn't be idled for any length of time if at all possible due to all the soot load up in the DPF and EGR crap. Just sayin'.
