So I've been talking with Werner the past few days and I've talked to about 2 or 3 different recruiters and they all said that Werner does not give road tests to drivers with no experience in Orientation. I graduated trucking school back in June but have had NOT driven a truck since then and I ask all of them if that was too long ago and if I would need a refresher, they all said no. They said they only require people to get refreshers if they've been out of the trucking industry for like 2-3 years and only give road tests at orientation to people if they have 30 days or more of experience, or have failed multiple road tests at other companies. And they said since I'm a student driver with no experience that I would NOT be given a road test at orientation in Allentown PA. I would just get DoT physical and drug test then do the typical paperwork, videos, and CBTs.
Is this true? I didn't believe the first recruiter, but I think I remember seeing other threads on here where people mentioned that Werner doesn't do orientation road tests for new drivers with 0 experience. Also I asked 2 or 3 other recruiters and they said same thing.
Do Werner not give a road test in Orientation for student drivers?

That don't make sense. Why would you road test experienced drivers and not fresh out school green horns. You would think it would be the other way around.

Swift had the same policy when I started with them, in 2010. Experienced drivers who were not going out with a trainer were given a road test during orientation, and drivers with little or no experience were given a road test after completion of training. The first driving I did for Swift was the second day after getting on my mentor's truck.

No road test until end of training (i just completed training 2 weeks ago) also your trainer has the option to give you the road test vs someone from the safety dept.
DriveItUSA and Dc16vfd Thank this. -
They dont road test inexperienced drivers because they will be going out with a trainer... tbey do road test experienced drivers before assigning them a truck, and they road test student drivers when they finish training and before assigning them a truck...

The trainer can be the one who tests you.. but it is up to safety if they will go with the trainer doing the road test or not.. if hour trainer flunks you, they will test you.. so nothing is solely up to tne trainer...

It's actually kind of good for me because since I haven't driven since June, I know I would be pretty rusty. My shifting should be still okay for a newbie, but I know my 90/45 backing is probably pretty laughable. -
Thanks for replies everybody, so Werner doesn't give new inexperienced drivers road tests in orientation, only when they complete the ~275 hours of training. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't being lied to.

If you test out in Omaha they might make you jump into the truck driving simulator as well (at the end of training) I did the simulator and it was interesting nothing like driving an actual truck but interesting

if you satisified the state, as far as Werner is concerned you are ready to go out with a trainer. You know the basics, time to refine those skills and what you learned.
however, May Trucking does a road test during orientation. some do, some dont.
