I'm not real sure about local. They get about the same treatment as the line haul guys. Fontana is a bigger yard but you will still probably be on the extra board. You might get to work on the dock if there are no runs for you. I've seen the local drivers usually jump right in and get a lot of hours at Reddaway that is. The pay is kinda low to start at Reddaway and doesn't top out to high either. We do get a raise every year.

If Fontana is where you are going to be close to then you have quite a few options trucking wise. Everything from UPS, FedEx, YRC, Old Dominion, Conway, Vitran Express, Oak Harbor Freight, Estes, R&L carriers. Of course they have terminals in LA and Orange county too. Really to many to list plus several OTR companies in Fontana.

They changed the bills now. For p/d we have to X whether we use lift gate, inside delivery, residential, sort/segregation, or limited access. They said its to try to help the financial problems. Inside delivery isn't to bad our TM just said stick it in the front door. Heck knowing that I wouldn't pay that lol. Depends what town your in some people will just stand there while others help you. If they help then I don't write it up. If I use the gate on my own I don't unless they ask for it

I am considering applying to USF Holland, Old Dominion, Saia, and Con-Way for a local driving job in the Chicagoland area/North lanes. Anybody have some advice as to who has the most reliable work load and best organization? I've been over-the-road for a year and a few months. Thanks for any input/experience you can help with...

I heard Conway is pretty tough. Old Dominion I hear is a great company. Saia is good too but a little unorganized from what I remember, that could have changed though. I'll just cut to the chase. If you want out of OTR, any LTL is better. If you want union, ABF, YRC (Holland is part of YRC) and I'm sure there are others in Chicago. Out west where I am the union has become pretty weak. If I had my pick of an LTL company it would be ABF, Old Dominion, Estes or R&L Carriers.

You have several options in the Chicago area. I'm a road driver for YRC Freight outta Chicago and we are hiring right now. It's not your typical OTR driving job as we are typically home every other day. Holland in Joliet is hiring city and road drivers. ABF is hiring city drivers as well

DO NOT GO CON-WAY! You will be treated like dirt, never get to work, and the turn over rate is EXTREMELY HIGH. I used to work there and they are non-union. You will also be a forklift driver working the dock MORE then driving

I dont know anything about Saia so I really cant help on that.

Old Dominion even though they arent union is actually very good company. Drivers get treated well, never heard of any complaints. NEw equipment etc. Holland is owned by YRC so Im sure its pretty much the same thing. Union company, dont pay for benefits etc. Try YRC as well as they are hurting for road drivers. If you want to be home every day then do city driver, you are paid hourly.

ABF is very good as well, dont know much about them though, but have an extremely low turn-over rate so it would take years for a bid.

Estes I have heard good things about but I would watch them. They are begining to close terminals down. I applied to them last year and about six months later they called me but I had just started YRC. THe guy was cool and said ok keep us in mind if it dont work out... Well few weeks ago I saw a sleeper truck pulling there pup trailer with a different name. Had no idea what it was about. Next day during the driver meeting one guy says they closed the terminal down and has a cartidge company pulling their freight and are missing pick ups like crazy. Its good for us because now we get more but I feel bad for the guys who just lost their jobs

R&L I would be careful with as well

UPSF is good, starting pay isnt great but it gets higher as time comes on. A lot of the old-school Overnite drivers HATE the union being there

FedEx Freight is similar to con-way. You will spend more time on a fork-lift then driving

Thats all I can really think of as of now, if you find out any more companies let me know and I will be glad to help

FedEx Freight didn't used to put you on the fork lift, did they? Is that something kinda new or has it always been that way? I remember running with those guys when I worked at Yellow and they had it good from what they said. Then again so did I. I really hope the rest of the LTL fleets don't start in with that. I heard R&L is doing it now too.

Yea that's how FedEx freight is. Don't know of its new but that's what they do now. Well YRC if you work the dock THAT'S all you do for the day. Management at my terminal all say they think doing both the same day is way to dangerous. We used to have velocity or utility drivers that would go to a close terminal and load up their own trailers. They did away with that

Well I'm glad to know FedEx is not an option anymore. So I just say no to Conway, FedEx and R&L. LOL! At my yard they will give the local guys the option to load and unload if it's slow but they don't have to do it.
