It's a tax write off. There was a story just the other day about it.
The story was related to the companies (Banks primarily) that were not going to be allowed the write down on their tax liabilities, if they took bail out money.
Done deals, and deals currently being forged, would not be effected.
Of course all the BIG players have done their deals, or are in the pipeline. Only the small fish are left. So once again, the little guy takes it up the ###.
That door closed Friday.

One of the reasons why you have four or five job offers is because Yellow is a good, respected company, known for having the some of the best drivers in the industry.
I am sorry that you got laid off, but many great companies are laying off right now with no opportunity for recall, daily call back or dovetailing. These are all benefits that you have and 99% of other workers don't.
Roadway and Yellow were great companies in this industry and it will be sad if they don't make it. Generations of men and women made a better life for their families because of them. They should not be on the same list of truly bad companies who destroy families like Werner, Swift and Covenant.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 18, 2009
luvtheroad and CornCob Thank this. -
Company drivers are an odd lot. I asked a Schneider trainer what he thought about Diesel hitting almost $4 a gallon (at the time). -He said it won't effect him or company drivers. Well Schneider training is mostly closed, these trainers are back on the road, and the solo trucks have the speed governors reduced to 60-63mph.
Reality hits some people slower than others.luvtheroad Thanks this. -
Actually, the trainer had it right.
Many large companies, and some small ones, thrive on high fuel prices. Due to contracted FSC. One of my old employers was telling me, he was hoping it would get higher. They (and me) were making a killing.
The fuel cost, didn't set this spiral in motion. Mr. Smith did.
He bought a $350k house and new SUV, on a $40k a year job. And topped his credit cards out, shortly thereafter.
Fuel cost, didn't make Mr Smith go crazy. He was crazy to begin with.luvtheroad Thanks this. -
TonBundle you hit the nail on the head. Everything you said has so much merit. I worked for APA Transport. Anyone who knows anything about LTL especially carriers from the northeast knew them to be the premier east coast carrier. The day they closed was sad, it was the end of an era. Let's all hope that Yellow/Roadway can survive this and stay afloat.

And the proof would be, ask one of these clowns to buy you a new car/house, and pay for it. They'd laugh in your face.luvtheroad Thanks this. -
Most people in this country don't understand what having responsibility actually means. They think that if they spend more than they can afford the goverment or someone else will bail them out. I don't believe that we should be bailing anyone out...companies or individuals alike.
Back on topic now. It will be a great loss if YRC does go out of business. They have been around along time with many good drivers retiring from them. I have yet to hear anything from YRC managment saying that they messed up. I mean use your logic. Yellow and Roadway merged the corporate offices...but not the operations. This just set the company up for failure. As a business man this makes no sense, even for the tax write off purpose it makes no sense. When you got two trucks making a delivery at a consignee that would of only taken one you will lose money.luvtheroad Thanks this. -
The problem with management is that they will not accept responsibility as well. In this case they will blame the unions. Look at their salaries.
Look at the companies involved in the bailouts. Not one has admitted that they made a mistake in the management.luvtheroad and pullingtrucker Thank this. -
