Lest you think that CARB only targets megacarriers with money to burn and/or smaller companies who can’t afford to upgrade their equipment, you should know that the State of California has found a new target for their atmospheric fines: itself.
The California Air Resources Board has issued a $256,375 fine against the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works for failing to comply with the state’s air quality regulations.
According to CARB, the issue came to light as the result of a routine investigation. Among other offenses, the enforcement division noticed that the LADPW hadn’t properly inspected their vehicles to make sure they met state emission standards and hadn’t put Emission Control Labels on their engines.
“We hold public agencies accountable for their mistakes the same as we do private businesses,” said Jim Ryden, CARB’s Enforcement Chief. “We hope that this fine sends a message to public and private fleet managers that they must follow the law and maintain their vehicles and records properly.”
The LADPW issued a statement in response to the fine which claimed that they were “[moving] quickly to rectify the inconsistencies with improved staff training in diesel emission testing and emission control labels, and the purchase of new testing equipment.”

Talk about transfer of wealth. No problem Californians, the offending agencies will do the

Question is: Is the fine paid from current budget funds, or are they allowed to appropiate ” new money” from the tax payer to pay the fines? If that was the case imagine the new revenue sources. Just fine yourself silly. Instead of fines I think they should fire people.
