Proposed changes to the Hours of Service (HOS) rules for truck drivers were posted on August 22nd. The public comment period was supposed to be open for 45 days, but the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has announced that it will be extending the comment period by an additional 15 days.
According to the notice posted on the Federal Register website, the FMCSA “believes it is appropriate to extend the comment period to provide interested parties additional time to submit their responses to the NPRM.”
Those “interested parties” include the American Trucking Associations, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Both the CVSA and the Teamsters asked for a 45-day extension to the comment period while ATA requested a 30-day extension.
By extending the comment period to a total of 60 days, the new deadline will fall on October 21st. That should give ATA members plenty of time to submit their comments following their annual conference – one of the reasons they requested an extension in the first place.
FMCSA Administrator Ray Martinez will be speaking at the ATA’s conference on October 5th.
At the time of publishing, 1,267 comments had been received on the proposed HOS changes. You can add your comment on the federal register website.

The ATA is nothing more than a lobbying arm for the mega carriers. I’m pretty sure they don’t need more time to comment on anything. They just want to make sure they have enough time to pay the right people so that only their comments are the ones that matter.

Why act like you are asking the trucking industry? Ask the attorneys that is all you really care about anyway. How to make more money by legislation. You do not care about safety. Otherwise the person holding the wheel would be allowed to stop whenever they chose to have a break or needed one. All of this is control over the industry that has made trucking more expensive and MUCH LESS SAFE…BEAT THE CLOCK IS NOW THE DEAL… KEEP GOING BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO BE OUT OF HOURS… STUPID!
