The December 18th compliance date for the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate is fast approaching and many carriers are still woefully unprepared. According to one survey, only about 40% of carriers are ELD compliant with less than 6 weeks to go.
CarrierLists.com publishes a weekly survey to see how ELD compliance is coming along in the industry. In the survey published of 11/6/17, a total of 1,982 fleets responded. Of those, only 41% said that they are already ELD compliant.
The majority of respondents were small carriers with between 6 and 30 trucks. And while it isn’t a peer-reviewed study with many thousands of respondents, according to one analyst with the 3rd-party logistics provider Kenco, the sample size is large enough that “we can say with a high degree of confidence that fewer than half of the operating carriers in the United States are ready for this change.”
Carriers don’t have much time left to get up to speed, and if they don’t do it in time, there will be serious consequences – and not just for the carriers. As CarrierList points out, “anything less than 100% adoption… will likely ripple through the trucking market in a tidal wave.”
A 40% compliance rate would mean that about 380,000 carriers aren’t ready for December 18th. And while drivers won’t start getting placed out of service for ELD infractions until the CVSA full compliance date of April 1st, companies can start racking up fines that could force them to park their rigs until they can get ELD systems installed. Coupled with the already increased demand due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, that could create a major capacity crunch just in time for the holidays.
Teletrac General Manager Daren Lauda warned not to delay until the last possible moment to purchase an ELD. In some cases, the wait for installation can be as long as two or three weeks. And once systems are installed, drivers, dispatchers, and other office personnel still need to learn to use them properly.
Congressman Brian Babin has just penned a letter to President Trump in a Hail Mary attempt to get the compliance date postponed for the ELD mandate. But even if successful, Rep. Babin is only seeking a 3-month postponement – enough time for carriers, drivers, and law enforcement to get used to the new systems.

It’s coming Dec 18. It’s going to be a mess and Trumps make America great again is going to get a huge speed bump.
So, can anyone suggest what system we are looking to buy?
I own an aobr made by rand mcnally, i used it only a couple times so far, im probably gonna go park the rig for a while and see which way the wind blows before running it again.
The system your looking for would be a 1999 or older engine to put in your truck.
LOL, But true….
Park em see how well the country moves. The Government is never ending line of regulation. Hell they can’t run the country, 20 trillion in dept and still growing
I agree. Lets put a bunch of old trucks on the road so that the need to feed another greedy corporation can starve instead of us.
Do the trucks running out of Canada and Mexico have to be compliant with the ELD’s as well?
Yep
I just wanna know which system is the dot approved
I’ve said this for years, “forcing” arbitrary cash expenditures of any person or fleet will be a disaster. There is no science to this, it’s a power grab from on high. December or April deadlines, this will never be implemented to every on road tractor.
Scare tactics, I’ll never install one in my truck. That 40% that they’re saying hasn’t complied yet will likely never comply.
Those who haven’t installed them by now are just irresponsible businessmen. Easy to drive a truck. Much harder to run a profitable business. I have an elog and put $1,000 a week into my retirement. Get on board or fail. Fight the battles that can be won and eliminate the 14 hr rule.
You’re my hero super trucker.
What Charlie said. 😉
1000.00 a week made me giggle.
My expense runs me $1,500 a week before fuel. I will never put a log in my truck. Come get me copper
Only 40% of Carriers Are ELD Compliant Says Survey…
Could that be because 60 percent us figured common sense would eventually kick in. Don’t care at this point. Implement it, delay it, give exceptions to some from it. ELD’s aren’t about safety, at all. Time will prove that statement. We don’t even have enough parking to support such a stupid law. For those who think Elogs will allow them to see the pay their entitled to, they’re correct, how much are you worth to anyone sitting on your duff for 10hrs. every time you turn around. I don’t think I’ll be dealing with this bs much longer.
