Amazon recently brokered a deal with Clean Energy to build 19 renewable natural gas stations starting to power its fleet.
Clean Energy Fuels Corp ranks among the largest providers of clean fuel for the transportation sector. Located in the Chicago, Illinois, suburbs, the proposed Romeoville station would reportedly provide upwards of 1.4 million gallons of energy for Amazon and others. The location is expected to refuel more than 100 Amazon trucks and reportedly has the bandwidth to handle hundreds more.
“The addition of the Romeoville station to our fueling network represents another step in the pathway for Amazon to realize significant carbon reduction for its transportation fleets,” Chad Lindholm, senior vice president of Clean Energy, reportedly said. “Trucks that operate on diesel are incredibly harmful to the air we breathe and contribute to long-term climate change.”
Amazon heavy-duty trucks have been working with Clean Energy across 86 current stations under an agreement the companies struck in 2021. The move adds to Amazon’s more than 200 renewable energy projects across North America, 117 in Europe, 57 in Asia and the Pacific, and a growing number in the Middle East, Africa, and South America.
“We are bringing new wind and solar projects online to power our offices, fulfillment centers, data centers, and stores, which collectively serve millions of customers globally, and we are on a path to reach 100 percent renewable energy across our entire business by 2025,” Adam Selipsky, CEO of Amazon Web Services, reportedly said.
In September, Amazon announced it had emerged as the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy worldwide. At the time, its had renewable energy projects in 21 countries that included 154 wind and solar farms and 225 rooftop solar installations. Amazon has been lauded by renewable energy insiders for following through on its commitment to clean truck fuels.
“As a key leader in the (Clean Energy Buyers Association) community, Amazon continues to demonstrate that when it commits to a vision, it drives a pace and scale that’s a new bar to follow,” Miranda Ballentine, CEO of Clean Energy Buyers Association and Clean Energy Buyers Institute, reportedly said. “Amazon also continues to be a leader in not only deploying today’s clean energy procurement tools at scale, but also in leading its community of peers and partners in developing tomorrow’s clean energy solutions — whether that’s focusing on ensuring renewables have sustainable supply chains or expanding the impact of clean energy through next-generation procurement tools.”
Freight transportation operations appear to be betting on different fuel types to achieve incoming zero-emissions regulations. Some are pre-ordering battery electric models such as the Nikola Tre BEV and Tesla Semi to fill out their fleets. Others are looking to hydrogen-powered rigs, as well as renewable natural gas.
