A number of Trump Administration rules which were put in place recently will be put on “pause” before they go into effect. One of the regulations that will be given a closer look is the under-21 interstate drivers program.
The program plans to allow drivers as young as 18 years old to operate CMVs in interstate commerce. Those taking part would need to undergo additional oversight and training for a short “apprenticeship” with an approved employer.
Safety advocates, driver groups, and trucking veterans alike have raised concerns about the regulations. But the large trucking companies represented by the American Trucking Association (ATA) who stand to benefit from the rule have had a great deal of lobbying power. Multiple under-21 pilot programs were proposed, approved, and subsequently expanded.
Now however, those same regulations may be put under a microscope by the incoming administration. It’s also possible that this batch of regulations may be among those which are waived through after only a quick glance by lawmakers. For now though, opponents of the program can rest easy knowing that large companies won’t be flooded by 18-year-old drivers… for the time being at least.

Biden’s not my President, BUT, hopefully the Harris Administration will STOP the “under 21” driver program. This is and always has been a VERY BAD idea from the start,
Bob says
Not all 18 year old people are bad and irresponsible. Some show more mature than some 30 even 40 year old people. FYI I am 60 myself. Stop stereotyping. Lets look at the drivers out there now and how bad some are. Oh by the way mone of them are between the age of 18 to 20
Maxwell Bridgers says
You are right about that
Keith A Trouo says
I agree!!
Where can I vote on this law?
Joe says
For?

Biden almost dropped dead during the primary. He’s not likely to finish out his first term. You may get Harris sooner than you think. She couldn’t even gain traction in her own party, during the primary, but soon she’s likely to be the non-elected President. It’s an inauspicious way to get the first woman into office.
She’d better do a heck of a good job, after getting in through the back door, or there won’t be another for a very long time…

Ok I get all that about the bus but why is there anything about biden.
Jerry A Ogden says
with the trainers we have out here in the big companies with only 2 to weeks experience all we need is more inexperienced drivers.

I heartedly agree!

I’ve have my cdl for a year, I’ve been driving tractor trailer for four months. Problem is no one wants to hire with little to no experience. You can’t get experience of no one hires you!!!!

History shows. Even in local commercial vehicles under 21 has more accidents by far. Really slows down after 25.
PatF says
Funny I see more 30 something speed in construction zones, pass me of the left, then slam on the breaks just to take the next exit 1/2mile ahead.
The only real reason it drops off is older drivers know where police hide.
Keith A Troup says
That driving in general
Tim Gurney says
Let demographics and insurance stats determine the wisdom of such an idea. I’m pretty sure it’ll be a reflection of most experienced drivers gut feeling.
Michael Lindsay says
This should be a mileage or hourly driving rule! It’s a lot different driving in Rhode Island and Delaware verses driving in Texas and California!
The major problem with the trucking industry is you have inexperienced people (lawmakers) that don’t have a clue about trucking making the rules!
Robert B Dales says
They should wait til there are 21 yrs old
Abigail says
I think it’s crazy to let kids get their drivers license at 16 in the first place. Lol
Joe says
That’s because there aren’t many between those ages because of that law.
Roosevelt McCain says
I think this would be a bad decision because even wen i was18 it was still alot of things i didn’t even no and stil no and still don’t so atleast wait until 21 then give them a try and go from there oh wen you get in to trucking please pay attention to what’s going on around you and i get to the point where can’t nobody tell you anything about trucking then its time for you to get out because your never to old to learn ijs.
John says
When I was 18 trucking was the last thing on my mind. The only thing I was interested in rymed with trucking.
Michael K says
I think by putting some 18 to 21 year old behind the wheel of some of the equipment is a bad idea and yeah some older drivers should be removed as well.
Jimmy Chesteen says
An 18 year old turned loose with a 40 ton rig just seems like a bad idea… God-bless them for wanting to work in comparison to slacker youth these days…i Would have jumped at the idea when I was 18, And could not have been a poorer choice to be Let loose with that type of equipment… Not knocking on kids…. We’ve all been there… But 18 is just too young… I started at 27 and it is what grew me up…
Coyote says
BTW, school bus drivers are among the worst drivers on the road. Keep that in mind
Keith A Troup says
Yeah!!
In case no one knew this
Bus drivers are tought be angry mean bus drivers not old truckers besides some of us have it in our blood.

WOW: In 1967 I was 17yrs. old living in southern California. At that time and I do not know what the law is now but if you or your family owned the equipment you could get your class A chouffers license and run agriculture products from farm to market. That ment you could run the harvest and just about anything that was related to food or the farm. At 18 you could run anything but you could not leave the state. Mexico to Oregon you would get all the miles you wanted. The scenery got old real fast for me but I was trucking. At 21you could have a cold beer after work and run anywhere you wanted. I hope that might help someone. It is up to you to check it out.
