A bill to repeal a 12% federal excise tax (FET) on the sale of heavy-duty trucks and trailers is getting underway.
The FET is a holdout from the WWI era, and its inadvertently keeping cleaner and safer trucks off the roads. The repeal of this tax can pave the way for more modern trucks with more benefits to drivers and the environment.
By modernizing America’s fleet, drivers and companies could save on gas, penalties, and maintenance costs, among other beneficial things. The repeal would allow companies to replace older trucks.
Cleaner fuel and engines in big trucks have combined to reduce nitrogen oxide emission by 97% and particulate matter emissions by 98% over the last 20 years, according to the ATA. Lifesaving technology like automatic emergency braking, collision mitigation, and electronic stability technology weren’t available ten years ago, and now you can find these in newer trucks.
This bill could be crucial in modernizing the fleet and making it easier for companies to afford new trucks means that drivers could see newer models and enjoy the benefits afforded these trucks.
The FET can add an extra $20,000 to the purchase of a new truck, and that can stop a lot of smaller businesses from affording new models. The repeal of this FET could greatly benefit the entire industry.

Cleaner trucks, really, I call it what it is, unreliable junk money pits, the only people making money in trucking today are dealers and mechanics because truckers are going broke with the so called “ cleaner trucks”, older engines were 100 times more reliable putting $$$ where belongs in the truckers pocket, emission engines are money pits we been force to buy them by law even if we don’t like them, is this isn’t communism I don’t know what it is.

All that do called technology is 100% junk. Getting rid of the FET, the HHUT, illegal road taxes, higher tolls etc might help

Alternatively I could take $90k or half the cost of a new truck. Buy a 359. Do an in frame and paint the truck and still have money to spare. Sorry but the new trucks are too complicated too finicky and prone to breakdowns. Might be cleaner for the environment but last I check the epa ain’t paying my mortgage and the warranties for the emissions system is a joke
