Having worked diligently on infrastructure projects for 24 years and served as chief operating officer for the South Carolina Ports system since 2018, Barbara Melvin recently took the helm as CEO.
Reportedly the first woman to lead a Top 10 U.S. container port, she possesses a staff of nearly 1,000 tasked with efficiently moving freight through the Port of Charleston, Inland Port Dillon, and Inland Port Greer.
“I am truly honored to lead our amazing team at S.C. Ports, who I have had the privilege of working with over the past two decades,” Melvin reportedly said. “Alongside our partners, we will work together to achieve operational excellence, deliver new infrastructure and grow our cargo base in support of our customers and our communities.”
Succeeding Jim Newsom, she becomes only the sixth S.C. Ports leader in the state’s history. The Port of Charleston is in the midst of 15 months of record-breaking volume and a Charleston Harbor Deepening Project designed to hit 52 feet, making it the deepest East Coast port.
Pitt Ohio Acquires Teal’s Express
Pennsylvania-based Pitt Ohio recently expanded its less-than-truckload footprint by purchasing the assets of Teal’s Express.
Pitt Ohio operated 21 facilities across the Midwest and mid-Atlantic states through a network of freight-hauling partners before acquiring Teal’s Express, based in Watertown, N.Y. The pair have been joining forces since 2016. The deal puts 11 Northeast and upstate New York facilities under the Pitt Ohio umbrella. According to reports, Pitt Ohio generated upwards of $780 million in revenue last year and has a staff that exceeds 3,000. The acquisition is expected to close on Aug. 13.
Vermont-Based LandAir Shutters
Upwards of 450 employees were stunned when the 54-year-old LandAir trucking operation recently shut down without notice. Based in Williston, Vermont, office personnel for the less-than-truckload carrier could not log into the company’s network. During the confusion, approximately 135 truckers reportedly discovered freight pickups had been canceled.
Insiders indicated the outfit recently fell on hard times due to rising diesel prices, inflation, and the high cost of living in New England. Initial reports indicate the company had not filed the required 45-day WARN Act notice, allowing truckers and administrative staff to seek other employment.
Greater Omaha Express Buys Universe Trucking
Greater Omaha Express expands its reefer capacity with the acquisition of Universe Trucking. Aligned with beef supplier Greater Omaha Packing Company, the purchase reportedly augments its fleet by upwards of 20 percent.
“At Greater Omaha Express, we strive to provide the highest quality of customer service through honesty and integrity,” Greater Omaha Express president Brenton Falgione reportedly said. “We consider our drivers to be like family, and we strive to maintain strong relationships with our clients and drivers. As we acquire Universe Trucking Co., we look forward to continuing that legacy.”
Universe Trucking was established as a family-run business in 1971 by Bud Johnson. Managed by his four sons, the organization transports goods throughout the Midwest, South, and Southeast.
