Two women who immigrated from Poland to start a trucking business recently received a subsidiary to build a headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri.
“The new building offers room to expand operations in trucking and education programs,” Michelle Stuckey, vice president of business development at St. Louis Economic Development Partnership, reportedly said. “Alcatraz has also expressed interest in partnering with nearby Mehlville School District for educational and career programs.”
Alcatraz LLC owners Agnes and Ziggy Matukin initially lived in New York City when they dipped their toes into the trucking waters. The Matukins relocated to St. Louis as their OTR shipments grew. The women started with one truck and have since grown the operation to 85 semi-trucks, 215 trailers, and a workforce that employs upwards of 130 people.
St. Louis County lawmakers approved a subsidy package that provides a 50-percent tax reduction over 10 years and $4.5 million in government bonds to reduce building costs. Alcatraz agreed to create 25 new full-time jobs by 2026 in St. Louis and assist immigrant drivers to relocate to the area.
Shoreland Transport Acquires Connors Transfer
Shoreland Transport Inc recently purchased Connors Transfer Limited in a move that increases its assets by 143 trucks and 261 trailers across four terminals.
“It means so much to our family to have the business we built join with another family-owned, Atlantic Canada-based company, with whom we share many community-minded values as employers and service providers,” Connors Transfer CEO Lauchie Connors reportedly said. “This will create a strong network to support customers and more opportunities for drivers and staff. It’s terrific the Cooke family continues to make strategic investments in Nova Scotia as a global seafood leader that’s always thinking locally.”
A subsidy of Cooke Inc, Shoreland operates a fleet of 115 trucks, and 217 trailers, with facilities in St. George, Canada, and Suffolk, Virginia. The operation covers routes throughout the U.S. and Canada, moving the lion’s share of salmon and seafood from Cooke Aquaculture companies and other Canadian-based outfits.
