The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued COVID-19 guidelines specifically for truck drivers. The CDC’s recommendations are meant to help keep drivers safe and inform them of what to do if they get sick.
According to the CDC, there are times when truckers should be aware that they are at increased risk of contracting COVID-19. These include “close contact with truck stop attendants, store workers, dock workers, other truck drivers, or others with COVID-19, and touching your nose, mouth, or eyes after contacting surfaces touched or handled by a person with COVID-19.”
Most of the recommendations will be familiar to anyone who has seen the CDC guidelines on COVID-19 for the general public, such as staying six feet away from other people when possible. In addition to the other guidelines, the CDC recommends that truck drivers take the following steps:
- If you are sick, stay home and notify your supervisor.
- Make a plan with both your employer and your family as to what you will do if you become sick while OTR.
- Follow CDC recommended steps if you are sick.
- Notify your supervisor if you have a sick family member.
- Limit time spent outside the truck cab
- Use paperless invoicing for fueling, deliveries, and any other task when possible
- Set up appointment times for unloading cargo
- Use radios or phones to talk with others including dock managers and other drivers
- Take supplies including food and water with you on the road to limit how much exposure you have to others and public places
- Avoid shaking hands
- Keep your truck well-ventilated
- Clean and disinfect the interior of your truck cab including your sleeper berth frequently
- If anyone else comes into your truck cab, have them clean and disinfect before you return
- Clean your hands before entering or leaving the cab, before eating or preparing food, and after touching your face coverings
- Avoid sharing PPE with others, even safety vests required by a shipper or receiver.
- Use only truck stops and businesses that have appropriate COVID-19 protections in place
- If team driving or driving with anyone else in the truck, wear a face covering and avoid sharing bedding
CDC also issued a number of recommendations for carriers to follow to help keep drivers safe and keep their business operating.
Visit the CDC website for the full CDC guidelines for truckers and carriers.

You mean in other words the same crap they tell everyone else…stay indoors, wash your hands, avoid others. Brilliant work CDC. Every bit as good as your testing plan.
ftothek says
Michelle, every comment you post is negative. Sounds like you need to get a life.
Karen W says
😉 well said .Trucking isn’t a game .
Trevor says
Except the plan for getting sick while being over the road. Can’t exactly pull into any medical facility. Going home is not an option, driving sick and passing out or even dying behind the wheel doesn’t sound to pleasant.
Trevor says
This was in response to Michelle’s comment.

You sound ignorant
Danny says
Im with you brother!!!!
We’ll put it’s nice to know I’m not the only one with that opinion.. 30 years here..
Joe says
I have no shame going underneath my trailer and taking a dump if shipper/reciever refuses to permit access to the restroom
This Russian says
I’m embarrassed to say I’m a truck driver simply because I don’t want to be lumped in with obnoxious dum dums such as Rick here.
Romey says
On behalf of all professional drivers, I can say that “Rick” does not speak for us.
Ks says
You need to know only that this deadly virus which is not mor deadly then last year flu shut down our economy. And You getting vaccinated like cow whether You like it or not because its all about money.
Trevor says
? Huh ?
Jude Ossowski says
Exactly what I was thinking.
Ronald says
Covid has killed near 40,000 people in just over four months the flu killed less then that in 6 months so yeah it is actually more deadly. We are in this spot now cause everyone downplayed it’s severity
Daniel Walker says
We have vaccines and herd immunity with the flu, which is why it’s less successful at killing us. People completely ignore the fact that we have had zero immunity to SARS-COV-2 because it’s a new strain, and furthermore, they ignore the fact that we get a new strain about every 2-weeks. The strain that became the most widely spread is also the most deadly one. Stupid people.. close your eyes, prey to God, ignore the rest. These are the people I hope get it and die, as harsh as it sounds. :/
Ks says
You must know at least like 5 people dead. Dont you? Ya right. Hospitals are payed to treat covid19 a lot of money and they test even people from car exidents this is why nrs are high. Check how many died for influensa couple years ago and educate Yourself
God gave You brain not just to have it.
B Tolley says
A heck of a lot of the deaths attributed to Covid19 were people very old & sick to start with… they more likely died WITH the C-virus than FROM it, but I guess that doesnt fit the popular narative too well for this Panic-demic thing.
Daniel Walker says
It’s not that simple. Everyone in the world has some basic immunity to the flu, which does not prevent you from getting the flu, but makes it less severe when the virus mutates. Then we have vaccines to further minimize its spread, so when we have 60% of people in the population vaccinated, that’s herd immunity – the virus infects a small number of people until it hits the end of the road – it’s not blocked off from going any further.
SARS-COV-2 was new and its serial time is up to 20-days – that means you may not show symptoms for 20-days, but the flu’s serial time is 3-6 days. You’d infect 5-6 people with the flu before you knew you were sick, whereas this coronavirus caused carriers to infect *20 people* before they knew they were sick with zero immunity.
If you really don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s like the world’s population is having unprotected sex several times a day with HIV-positive partners. Get it? You will if you don’t protect yourself. lol.
Daniel Walker says
GIVE US AN EDIT BUTTON!
*now blocked off
Susie q says
It’s all about President his people are not doing their jobs. This stupid virus doesn’t even supposed be here. And the rest of world fell asleep too. As soon the heard about it they should have gone and help contain it. Now until we get the shot it will help. A lot people already die. That really sad. This whole thing yes part it about money . How is America great. Fu.. I preferred to go back in time. We had it better.
Mark Gillespie says
Well that’s real nice to bad this country can’t control getting us Hand Sanitizer, Lysol was out of stock USA wide 5 days after lock down.
Also stop people from selling useless mask from china box says FDA approved, small print reads will not protect against virus, only allergies.
JAC says
I’m a local driver in Louisville and this is still a problem.
Trevor says
Yeah people aren’t staying home. Still a lot of traffic and most aren’t for essential means. I notice this with most of Kentucky, same with my home state of Virginia excluding Northern VA. Now driving through a West VA, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois(Chicago included) , Pennsylvania, a Tennessee has.been great with no traffic and delays. North Carolina has pockets of areas that traffic isn’t great(Durum area especially).
Karen W says
Hydrogen peroxide and aloveira gel makes good sanitizer
Kelly says
You go Rick. Tell it like it really is.
Jughead says
Amen Rick. I’ve seen drivers come out of stalls, look in the mirror and comb their hair with their fingers and head straight to the restaurant. Drivers are pigs and have no hygiene. Piss bottle all over the parking lot. Come on guys, at least shower more than once a year.
Susie q says
Not all . Some shower everyday….but yeah you do come across some nasty fuc.ers.
Miles Puckett says
we are under so much regulation that it is crazey ,one man with one truck should not need a MC number
Robert says
Miles… what the heck does that have to do with the virus?
Dmechanic says
He’s mixed up!
S. Ellison says
I too have been driving for 20yrs. At one time I enjoyed it, I’m now counting down my last 3yrs. I’m going out at 62. I’m done, Everyone should be looking after their personal hygiene. I have seen a lot of traffic on the road the whole time. Most people are not staying at home. They should open up things, and just be careful. If you wear the mask just remember that you are breathing in your own dirty air. Please be safe and careful.
Romey says
On behalf of all professional drivers, I can say that “Rick” does not speak for us.
Mike says
Really 🤔🤔 all y’all have done is giving shippers/receivers a VERY good excuse NOT 2 allow us truckers use of their restroom facilities. Where are we(truckers) when were on their grounds for 15 hrs suppose to poop/pee, wash our hands @???
Ronald says
Ask the shipper/receiver if you can use the restroom if they say no then ask for a roll of paper and when they say why tell them your just gonna go right there and you need the paper to wipe after. It’s worked for me more then once to use the restroom
Dmechanic says
Crude but effective!
Robert says
Hey mike, how did we give the warehouses the excuse not to use their facilities? Prior to this virus we were able to use their facilities. Due to this virus, not truckers, we are being restricted from using their inside facilities due to the greater risks to their employees of contacting the virus. Most of these warehouses if they do not allow you to use their plant facilities provide outside porta John’s and wash basins. Apparently you have a hard time grasping that these warehouses have a obligation to their employees first, then you second.
Devin Rogers says
I guess people don’t understand this is a WAR. Worries about where to use it is a rookie and won’t make it toliet seat, 5 gallon home depot bucket that you double line with garbage 🗑️ bags. Drop, wipe, tie out the truck. Simplicity, worry about the important shit.
Daniel Walker says
Yeah, I just said, “That’s fine. Just so you know, I’m going to be pissing in your grass” and the shipper (whom btw I’ve know for a couple years now) just said “That’s fine”. haha.
John says
Teams shouldn’t share bedding? Do you guys know anything about driving trucks?
Roseann says
Excellent advice. We are all doing what we can to prevent the spread of CV19.
Elbert White says
What a crock of BS! Why not just retire to a damn desert island while you’re at it.
There are reasonable steps to take care of yourself, but that list is ridiculous.
I’m not gonna be a boy in a balloon.
There are NO guarantees in this life and government mandates will NOT create one either.
Grim Reaper says
Ronald is correct! I had to threaten to go in a shippers lot after 9-11 when they shut down the bldg to us. I am retired now, so can only try to realize just what y’all are going through now. Blessings to all u gear jammers ( auto selectors too)
Daniel Walker says
What you need to know is, you will be exposing yourself to keep shiz moving for people that will still cut you off and hammer the brakes directly in front of you and you’re getting paid the same. Thanks for the update.
Mike says
The “face covering” is only an attempt to stop any spread of germs the person wearing it might have. Harvard Health says the virus can remain airborne for up to 3 hours! I want a mask that protects me! An N95 mask (if you actually find some please let me know) or a KN95 which has the same 95% filtering but less rigid fit requirements. If I am not allowed to post a link to one place I found them please remove. Stay safe out there.
R.J. says
I’m 63 y/o….I parked the truck, first week of March. If I’m gonna get sick…its gonna be at home…not in a truck stop somewhere, or dead in a rest area.
Ks says
Everywhere I ask people if they know anybody hospitalized for covid19 and nobady knows hospitalized people. Supose to be so deadly virus. I think only vaccination save as. BillGates working on it.
Jude Ossowski says
So a computer whiz is working on a cure for a disease in the human body. I feel much better now. What if I don’t get the vaccine? You get it so you’re protected. I don’t get it so I’m not. My choice.
Deaconblues62 says
Instead of worrying so much about the CVIRUS, worry about the ATM’s shutting down. Imagine that mess.
Michael Glover says
If you had competent leaders from the head of your country to the center they would not have stopped everybody from working and ruined the country from The Stroke of a pen executive order produce test in every state on every corner test when you come positive you get to go home and we pay you to stay home the mask and the gloves Lysol and bleach hand sanitizer free the medication that they using that works sometimes mass-produced that Mass produce ventilators and space in hospitals and other locations for patients have companies to have their employees to sanitize their work areas pressure washing companies landscapers pay them to sanitize treats carpet cleaning companies sanitize malls you were still have 1 trillion dollars left in the budget right now from the 2 trillion very stupid
