Americans value truck drivers and their service but want them to avoid parking near homes, according to a 2023 survey by CloudTrucks. 56% of 1,000 American adults surveyed were unfamiliar with the issue, but 86% recognized its importance once planners explained it. 95% supported dedicated parking facilities, but 80% only if they were 3+ miles away. Two-thirds called for more government funding, 43% for relaxed zoning, and 40% for tax incentives. Americans understand the difficulty of drivers’ jobs, with 58% believing they’re underpaid and 50% safer than the public.
Despite “not-in-my-backyard” feedback, survey findings gave CloudTrucks executives optimism that the public understands the problem. Co-founder and CEO Tobenna Arodiogbu said it’s vital to ensure resources for truck drivers are proportional to their service. The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act, incorporated into the SHIP IT Act, provides $755 million over four years in grants for truck parking creation and expansion. Eligible entities include states, metropolitan planning organizations, local governments, and private entities. The act also opens up inspection and weigh stations and park-and-ride locations for parking expansion.
