Colorado DOT’s Heavy Tow and Chain Assistance programs are set to resume over the Thanksgiving weekend.
This will be Heavy Tow’s third year, with heavy duty wreckers strategically placed on standby along I-70 West to help get big trucks safely out of traffic to safe locations during inclement weather, weekends and holidays. Wreckers will be on standby from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Nov. 25, takes off on Thanksgiving Day, and continues for the remainder of the long weekend of Nov. 27-29.
Heavy Tow cuts the time needed to move big trucks and get lanes reopened from nearly an hour down to an average 27 minutes, said Tony DeVito, CDOT regional director of transportation.
The program is scheduled for weekends through April 4, and holidays of New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day and other days CDOT feels the added coverage is needed. Typical hours of the service are 6 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturdays for I-70 westbound, and 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. on Sundays on I-70 eastbound.
Chain Assistance also begins this weekend, the second year for that program. Drivers can buy chains and services between Denver West Boulevard and Dotsero on I-70. CDOT has approved two companies to aid truckers at 21 different chain stations. The service will run as necessary through the winter months. This year truckers may carry the AutoSock traction alternative to chains.
Beginning Friday, four-wheelers can get free roadside assistance through the state’s Courtesy Patrol program, which handles flat tires, jump starts and other small-vehicle helps to keep the roadways clear and traffic moving.
