A problem with computer updates at the California Department of Motor Vehicles has created a major backlog in permit processing. As a result, approximately 5,600 Motor Carrier Permits (MCPs) have been delayed. If carriers don’t get their permits renewed in time, they will not legally be allowed to haul freight.
The public information officer for the California DMV, Marty Greenstein, told Overdrive that the problem began during a scheduled update of the computer system in February. During that update, something went wrong. By the time it was sorted out, the DMV had a backlog of 5,600 MCPs.
MCPs are required for California-based trucking companies and must be renewed every year. Without a valid MCP, a carrier is not allowed to operate.
State Assemblyman Jim Patterson says his phone has been ringing non-stop. He claims that trucking companies are still waiting on permits and are being told that if they don’t get them in time, they’ll need to take their trucks out of service.
With an estimated 6-week delay on MCP applications, that could be enough to shut down a small company – even if it’s been doing well.
UPDATE: According to the California DMV, the systems issue was corrected in March and they claim that there should no longer be a backlog. Despite that, Patterson claims that there are still “hundreds of trucks who, as of this very day, still have not gotten their permits.”

California wasnt the only one, or maybe I was the only one I in Illinois to not receive theirs on time.
Received the money plenty in plenty of time. According to them, a mix up in processing. I get pulled over April 1st….$1400 citation…hrs later receives registration. SMH.
If you received a ticket like that on the same day registration arrived, you can get that ticket dismissed. Registration would have been active on a previous date. It’ll be the same number as the previous year, and the trooper could have used and old registration card to verify current status. Since that wasn’t done, go to the court, show proof, and it will be dismissed.
California wants all diesel powered vehicles banned. It would seem to me, that, some tree hugger planted a bug.
That’s just a conspiracy theory my friend. Not helpful to resolve the problem…There is plenty to be p….. about with CA. & it’s DMV that is a bureaucrat’s dream job. Let’s focus on getting answers as to why they are so inept!
Won’t happen in our lifetime unless they want to go back to homesteading. To much reliance on the industry as it is
Ha ha. I live here and I completely agree.
So I am CA based. I incorporated a few years ago, it wasn’t until chp motor carrier terminal inspection (bit) came up that I found out my mcp was not valid due to incorporating. Apparently you have to get a new mcp. This was Aug of 2018. Today I have a new mcp number but no physical permit in hand. They were quick to cash my check but when I call they say “it’s still being processed”. Oh yeah and they said they had not received copies of work comp and general liability insurance which was sent in originally. So I sent it again, and it’s been almost 2 months since that. DMV needs to be privatised to allow incentives for faster processing. As a Gov agency its efficiency as always is HORRIBLE!!!!
