Cummins marked the 2.5 millionth engine produced at its Jamestown Engine Plant (JEP) in New York with a celebration that honored the past and teased the internal combustion technology’s future. The plant produced 500,000 engines during its first 25 years, scaling to 2 million over the next 25 years. Srikanth Padmanabhan, Cummins engine business president, noted that 50% of heavy- and medium-duty trucks on US highways are powered by Cummins engines. The plant will receive a $452 million investment to retool Cummins’ new fuel-agnostic engine platforms.
Cummins Upgrades for Engines of the Future
At JEP, 1,500+ employees are creating a fuel-agnostic internal combustion engine platform (X15N) to reduce emissions. The $452M upgrades to the nearly one-million-square-foot plant will be tested by FleetOwner 500 For-Hire fleets (Knight-Swift Transportation, Ryder, UPS, etc.). Cummins’ “Destination Zero” strategy plans to reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2030, and the X15N and X15H hydrogen engines will provide a bridge while battery-electric and fuel-cell electric solutions are developed. The X15N offers up to 10% fuel economy & GHG improvement over an ISX12N, with ratings up to 500 HP & 1,850-lb.-ft. Torque weighs more than 500 lbs. less than a diesel X15.
Cummins Investing in Fuel-Agnostic Engine Platform
JEP Plant Manager Anna Dibble explained that the nearly half-billion-dollar investment would fund upgrades to JEP’s facilities to produce the new fuel-agnostic 15-liter engine platform. These upgrades include a new X15 short-block assembly line and an advanced functional test cell. Thirty-five tractor-trailers bring parts and equipment into the plant, and 40 semis leave with completed engines daily. Cummins earned $2.2 billion on sales of $28.1 billion in 2022. The plant currently assembles the X15 and X12 diesel engines and the ISX12N natural gas engines. X15N is in the Alpha stage and being prepared for total production. Dibble invited the crowd for JEP’s 50th anniversary next year and noted that the plant’s workers made it all possible, saying, “We are proud to have such a strong presence in the community and be able to create a welcoming, caring, and all-inclusive environment for our people to be successful.”
