After years of deliberation and multiple last-minute pushes both for and against the ELD mandate, the compliance date has come and gone. The majority of large commercial vehicles on the road are now required to operate with federally mandated ELDs. But it appears the transition from paper logs to electronic may not be going as smoothly as the FMCSA may have hoped.
Despite multiple bills stuck in legislative limbo in Congress, lawsuits and lobbying from OOIDA, and letters from both members of Congress and state attorneys general, the federal enforcement agencies appear confident in their decision to move forward without delay.
“Today, jurisdictions around the country are implementing the ELD requirement,” said Collin Mooney, Executive Director of the CVSA. “Enforcement personnel have been trained in anticipation of the ELD rule and now that it is in effect, inspectors will be verifying hours-of-service compliance by reviewing records of duty status requirements electronically.”
But despite Mooney’s assurances, when Overdrive talked with drivers and enforcement officials they heard stories showing that things have been implemented differently around the country.
During his very first inspection with an ELD violation for instance, Sergeant Jason Morris of the Kentucky State Police found that there wasn’t even yet a way of documenting an ELD violation in his state’s central computer system.
Regardless of whether or not Sgt. Morris had been able to log the violation, Kentucky is one of a few states that – according to Overdrive – have decided not to issue citations for noncompliance of the ELD rule until April 1st, 2018. That is the date when the CVSA has decided that noncompliance will start effecting CSA scores and enable drivers and carriers to be placed out of service.
Other states which are adhering to a less dogmatic enforcement schedule reportedly include Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. But even states who won’t be issuing citations right away will still be conducting ELD checks.
Some law enforcement, including Captain Chris Turner of the Kansas Highway Patrol, expects that given the learning curve “most states are trying to err on the side of caution.” But many states are leaving that decision up to individual officers.

“But it appears the transition from paper logs to electronic may not be going as smoothly as the FMCSA may have hoped.”
Wow they’re surprised that they force everyone to Elogs and it didn’t happen overnight?
Stupid is what stupid does !
Everyone know about this for at least two years. “ TWO YEARS “. And decided to not do it, and now last minute idiots making UNJUSTIFIED CLAIMS.
Everyone doesn’t play follow the leader like you do!
Yes, and intelligent people know that the past tense of know is “knew.” But I’m not as hateful as to call people idiots, when I know the proper term is ignorant. It would do you well to study the proper use of the English language.
Not everyone follows the news as well as most of us. I’ve even spoken to drivers in truck stops that didn’t even know what brand of engine they had, or even the gear ratio of the truck they are driving! Some people see this as just a job, do not follow the news, and once they get out of the truck it’s family time. The truck or the business does not even enter their mind. So yes, many may have been obstinate, knowing the upcoming law, but believing so much in this country, and the freedom it provides, to believe they would never impose on truck drivers what the SCOTUS has ruled can’t be done to child molesters.
In your case I’m just going to surmise that in your hate speech, your anger burned so bright that your ignorance overrode your knowledge of the proper use of tenses in your construction of English sentences.
Spoken very well !!!!
I’ve sent to entities of the DOT and one don’t need a lot of IQ to understand the fmcsa and DOT has not provided parking space for the amount of trucks the are regulating, that should have the first thing done so idiots may not be to strong of a opinion, and I not saying this because of hate,it’s just the truth, and they know about it not being enough space and going forward anyway leaving rigs to park on ramps.on the shoulder of the road wherever they can, the safety factor here leaves one wondering about the intelligence of the fmcsa and the dept, when ever you see a rig parked on a ramp he’s no parked there because he want to,he would rather be where a shower, bathroom, and food, only a idiot would reject this
Very well spoken, you must really be an operator not some jerk off that cant see whats happening. Elec. logs will never work.
We need to stand together. Only united can we over come the battle we face. Decided we fall or fail. Treating others as you would treat your self. With respect and kindness for other and your self. We want to make a change in the laws of our country. We must stand together. Call your senator’s and the president let them hear us. Only then can we make a difference.
That would be “devided”. ☺
ELD sucks. It is gonna be much more accidents on the road.
Because?
No more stopping in bad weather and waiting for the the roads to clear up going to have driver’s pushing like crazy even in bad weather to get home to Thier family’s before having to reset on the road.Elog is great for big companies that pay like crap and for driver’s that don’t like making any money.Thank God above for pre 1999 trucks that are exempt
More accidents in the parking lot of your favorite truck stop trying to find that last space before time runs out.
I’m starting to see the effects of ELDs … Though it could be stupidity. But anyway I was driving in snow Christmas Eve . Road wasn’t terrible so I was doing fifty , my rule is if I can’t drive forty then I’d rather park than waste my hours ( but I’ve also always been on elogs my whole seven years of driving ) . Anyway some moron , I am using that word correctly by the way even though IDIOT and other terms would also apply, flew by me in his truck and trailer well over seventy mph not only nearly blowing me off the road but then I almost ran off the road blinded in his snow packed back wash . Now sure maybe this idiot always drives with no care at all about how he drives ( a car creates a body bag a truck creates a body count … As the general rule ) or he was racing his electronic shackles trying to get home before he ran out of hours .
This will become the norm because now drivers can’t make up a couple minutes here and there to get home and the government just expects people to choose between paying their bills or being home . With ELDs you really can’t maintain the same choice you had before .
Tailgating will become an issue too . Drivers always get mad when people think the speed limit is just for show and hold them up but now they can’t just sit back , relax and if needed tweak out a couple minutes on their logs because someone decided 55 in the 65 was fast enough for them and therefore every behind them . The list goes on and on . Fact is people like to say the list is made of unforeseeable circumstances. If that’s so then maybe we need to stop electing lawyers and college graduates to government and start electing pipe fitters , burger flippers and high school drop outs to Government…because they all saw this list of UNFORESEEABLE CIRCUMSTANCES coming .
Overnight? We’ve known this was coming for over a decade. And 24 months ago knew the exact date it would start. Now that it’s official, maybe we should start screaming about the real issue.. HOURS OF SERVICE.
What about the unconstitutionality of the on board recorders themselves? We have had the h.o.s. for a decade and never done more than whine about it. They want electronic logs? ok but make them legal ditch the GPS part.
The real issue is the shipper/consignee talking all day to load/unload, they’re the ones that need to manage their time better to effectively get us in/out.
Amen to that that is fact not to mention after sit 4 to 5 hour with an appointment cutting in to your drive time no one seem to approve your pay for detention time but you better not be 30 minutes late or they will take from you pay an we are the ones who have no control over traffic an or road construction accident etc ELECTRONIC LOGGING IS A WAY TO REGULATE A DRIVERS PAY AN PUSH US OLDER DRIVERS OUT AN THESE YOUNGER DRIVERS IN THAT CAN MOLD HOW THEY WANT KEEP THEM OUT LONGER FOR LITTLE PAY. GOOD LUCK WITH ELECTRONIC LOGGING
Can’t stand it when shipper or receive are not ready when you been driving to get there and they know it. Or they take their sweat **s time to load or unload. Oh by the way
MERRY CHRISTMAS .
No we need to be paid by the hour. This will end ELD.
Elogs are not a new thing. You act like they were dropped down from Mars.
Rand mcnally 50 half work, it work the first day, the next day locked my phone up wouldn’t let me log in OR nothing
In April, the percentage of trucks not compliant will remain at 60% and beyond. This will be a headache for a long time
Its too bad truckers can’t band together to demand a little respect from shippers, receivers, rest areas, and we stop being treated like second class citizens
takes a hell of alot to even organise a rally much less a strike
i have been at and involved in every rally on the east coast dc to fl. left lane jammer ^5
I agree.
Perhaps earning and deserving the respect would come first?
Too many yes men in these trucks today that is living well beyond that means trying to be something they are not impress people that don’t give a dam about them an promise mamma she would have her wal-mart $ every week pulling together just not going to happen it sounds good but NOT GOING TO HAPPEN
Sometimes like cum of the earth. You don’t like truck drivers stop eating!!!!
Little consideration was given to oversized load truckers that operate under unique laws. Oversized load truckers are restricted to time of day and route travel due State and local laws. I see this Poorly enacted and burdensome Law will cause a huge increase in fees truckers of oversized loads will need to charge or chose not haul oversized loads. One example is that pilot cars are required as escort vehicles and if the trucker starts his truck to hook up load and no matter how slow you try to “creep” the truck to the load he time of on duty starts. The load by law must have time consuming lights and flagging being installed and all pilot vehicles must onsite and ready. If Even one pilot car is delayed the trucker is burning on duty time hours. Another factor ignored is oversized loads often can not use the most direct route or purdently must drive at slower than posted speed limits for safety reasons. Weather which is very prone to changes such as fog can shut down oversized load thus consuming value on duty available hours.
You sir have nailed I’m in od specialized hauling myself
I forgot the woman’s name who was in D,C, in charge but she have no idea what’s going on this nation’s highways.
So, since ELD’s in and of themselves do not change any of the things you pointed out that you have to attend to while dealing with o.d. freight, your true complaint is actually that you will know longer be able to falsify your logs? Because each and every thing you pointed out should have been logged as on duty time all along. The exception being waiting on a tardy pilot car which you could actually still log off duty or sleeper time for if you are legally parked and relieved of responsibility just like when you are parked any other time.
Less hassle at the chicken house with ELD’s once they see this device. I’ve been using ELD’s for 4 yrs now & the biggest part was getting the customer to pony up on the loads getting us out on time & when the freight is late they’ve no one to blame but themselves.
Yes.i agree.i do oversized my self.most of the drivers out here, are just steering wheel holder’s and don’t know what real truckers have to do to take care of their families.i don’t see them wrecking.but the eld ones are.lack of training and experience in all weather.i think is why.plus there dispatch pushing them to hard.i think the eld is so wrong for me.if I was a large company it might be ok to monitor my trucks and drivers.but not for me.my eld worked for about a day and now it is messed up and won’t let me log in.trying to get help.said they would get back to me
Does this includes local driver in the city.
The day has finally come that paper logs thank God has Eventually gone from us truckers and it means that us as trucker now have to tighten up our own self compliants there in the trenches. It’s like a roller coaster ride, there’s no stopping it now.
Can’t stop it but I can stop me have fun with that $600.00 check before taxes. LOL sad but true!!!
I have been driving for 36 years..Eld’s has One good thing companies can’t run you in the ground like the old days..bad side the didn’t leave no flexiability in it..like that 30 minute break..or getting to a safe haven to park if the shipper or receiver held you up all day or night..government should got on shippers-receivers—they want you there say at 0700 but don’t get u out till 2 pm..if your late 5 minutes it’s sometime 3 to 4 hundred dollars late fee..get on there butt me FMCSA…
There is no such thing as a “safe haven” unless your transporting explosives. 14 hours is 14. 11 is 11. One of the most misunderstood concepts in trucking. “But I can drive to a safe haven”….. no you can’t. Unless of course your transporting explosives.
But you do need a place to park and that requires a spot roughly 10′ x 80′ that is not alongside the road or an exit/on ramp with fairly easy access to and from the highway. I do not think things have changed much in that area lately so you can stop early or drive until you find one but you must leave no matter what your log says as shippers do not allow you to hang around for 8 or 10 hours after you load even if you were that long in getting loaded. You have to do something..
It’s a play on words and it works. Just ask any safety guy. There’s no way I’m going to be stuck and can’t remove myself from a receiver who forced me to leave properry
Safe haven is the excuse to push farther to get closer being able to reach your destination when you otherwise wouldn’t have been able to cause you were too far out. Stop sooner staying under your time cause in the end you’ll get flagged for driving over your time. When that red triangle flashes & the diesel bear pulls you over seeing that, then what, cause 5 miles back was a truck stop with plenty of parking.
The only thing that’ll save you will be a delay in route due to an accident ahead of you that slowed you down but note it in the comment section so safety can adjust your time.
They won’t because their not under CVSA or FMCSA regulations, only the carriers and it’s up to them to back up their drivers which they don’t. So the shippers and receivers don’t listen to the drivers why should the carriers.
I quit a job after 10 yrs with a carrier cause they wouldn’t listen, which later woke them up cause it put them in a bind from hell. If the carriers would charge major detention fees that would hopefully wake up the customers.
Yeah I been driving a lil longer and what I see is the enforcers, the shippers and the carriers are all to together on this and organized to be able to blame the driver for whatever,I long ago figured this out
I’m glad for elogs for my truck and it will create more freight higher revenue for my truck.
Actually customers are not required to pay for this mandate everyone thinks this will create higher revenue but no where is it required for customers to compensate us for the technology
if you want to run for the same old low rates, then you get what you deserve,I have already went up on my rates
Higher rates come from truck shortages. If a carrier who had been running paper logs can’t pick up the load on time, the rate generally will go up because they need to get it covered at the last minute. I am just adding another $100.00 to my rate now. It’s my ELD fee.
Well I’m an O/O hauling ltl refrigerated freight. Rates out of our warehouse went up 12% in our area and going easy they went up 16%. So an east load to OH, PA I just did. It used to be $5517 gross now $6400, 76.5% goes to the truck. Thats for 1682 miles which includes 92 miles deadhead to next haul back west. So may not be every where, rates are increasing. They did it because we have so many stops it could impact our loads back at times. Downside hurts some of our other customers that we serviced to get back.
I agree no where does it say that but
Elog in a truck means trucks will demand more for pulling that load.
Example load from Olanda to North Miami 237 miles I charged 900.00.
Before elog same load $775.00
You will notice it more and more.
Hahaha
Yes, and Santa will visit you this weekend.
Guess again
You are so naive…It will reduce your revenue at least 10-20 %
Jesus! Who you been working for?
Must be a Schneider driver lol
if customer can’t get their freight when they want it, yes, they will be paying the higher cost of finding someone that can.
Speed limiters would’ve prevented this.
There is no end to government intrusion. That will be next and those two thing have nothing to do with each other.
I’d rather have ELDs than speed limiters any day of the week for sure!!!
When the Fed finishes with it, they will limit trucks to 55, require you to fuel certain times, require you to stop to rest every 4 hours to rest, require you to wash your truck every 2 weeks, require you to kiss your bosses bum every payday.
How please
I’m.missing something
They NEED the “fleet style” eld so they can keep an eye on these new drivers they are puttin in seats. The owner operator or experienced driver dosent need the same kind of unit. The fleet deal rats out a drivers bad habbets or stupid s $%# they do. This way they can drive the truck from the desk.
Seriously??? The only thing speed limiters will do is make the entire country a rolling roadblock!!! Ever go down the road and two companies trucks try to pass each other? Takes miles!!! Holding up everyone behind them! And if they want to make the roads safer put the limiters on four wheelers
I dont care if elds are good or bad! Its to much government intrusion to liberty and freedom. Lets see what happens when all vehicles on the road have to have electronic logging devices. Seems to me non commercial vehicles account for tje largest number of crashes. So if this is really all about safety then lets put em in all vehicles!!!!
It’s not about safety it’s about the big carriers running with company drivers getting forced into elogs years back because of so many violations that whinned until they got blogs imposed on everyone else…Its all about money not safety…Im sure texting and driving kills more people than tired drivers the only problem is most of the public and fmsca texts, but don’t have a cdl…Its also just job justification. One stupid rule after another…
Well amen! Now I’m running 8 hours-takingmy 30 mins -grabbing some junk food and back iñthe seat to finish my day. Hopi no storm orwreck will slow me down befy clock runs out ___so much better for my heart and health!! Sarcasm intended
Well I’ll say it again the problem is we don’t stick together out here the worst possible thing that we can do is to show them that the ELD will work what should happen is drivers that are hauling crucial very important mode that have to be somewhere is to don’t make it to be 1 hour away and parked for 10 hours you take you cannot make it if we show them that this works then nothing nothing will change I heard all drivers to band together and make it as difficult as possible parked everywhere in the way don’t get important loads where they need to go it’s it’s clearly not going to it would not work it does not work and as far as safety is crazy
A main problem with the dot..they leave things up to the individual officers, some of which are power happy sobs, who call you a liar, write you up because they *think* you are lying, or because they dont *believe* you, and there is no recourse, as all complaints go directly back to the same officer that wrongly wrote you up…usually there has to be proof of a crime or wrongdoing before you get in trouble but with the dot, the officers can think or dream you are doing wrong and you are automatically guilty, with no way of having it reviewed by impartial or less idiotic officers or better yet a panel of people that know the actual laws instead of by the same sob that writes you up because hes hunting brownie points, dont like your hat, or mad he is married to a overbearing fat slob that runs around on him with truck drivers.
They’re leaving way too much discretion to the officers. One of my drivers got pulled over on the first day and he didn’t even want to look at his elog. He wrote him up for not having his weekend off duty on paper logs even though he had them on the elog. He also gave him a ticket, which supposedly they weren’t going to do. Another driver got pulled over for the same reason but that time no tickets but he did put him out of service! They said they weren’t going to do any special enforcement but they were FREAKING EVERYWHERE every day this week! It’s ridiculous that they are not cutting us some slack. We are trying to follow the law, but there is an adjustment period. Bunch of pricks!
Couldn’t have said it better myself thank you driver
If DOT is so right then issue me a ticket for the violation but NO they give a warning that can’t be fought & we get hit with points that take forever to drop off. Slick Ricks!
And 34 years of driving the number of good. Officers I have dealt with outnumber the bad 100 to 1 but I have dealt with one that was an outright liar and that was in South Texas
Well hell DOT certified officers are still giving tickets out for not being able to print out logs
How the hell are elogs going to create more freight or revenue for your truck? Are you in charge of companies shipping more freight? What a statement?
Anyone have problems with that jjkeller ? Seems that sucker gobbles up my 14 when I have it either on sleeper or off duty. Shut me down a few times and losing loads cause not enough time to get there to load / unload.
I use blue ink tech eld.It had me showing I run over 800 miles while I was at home off duty one day.It also showed me parked at home at 2 different locations. This is the worst thing i ever saw hit the trucking industry
Yes jj keller system is junk
John can you elaborate a little about using jj leller?I may be going for produce in Phaar Tx etc and back u?from what I hear some guys sitv24 hrs waiting for product at the loading dock
Dude the 14 hour clock is continuance not accumulative which is the main problem with ELDs. It’s a one size fits all concept which will never work. Your 14 hour clock ticks off as soon as you log on duty for that they. The only thing that off duty and sleeper time save is the 70 hour clock which is accumulative.
Elds are not safe. All the stats show elds have 50% more fatalies then paper logs. 80% more accidents then paper logs.
On paper logs I was able to sleep when I wanted too.
Now I’m forced to drive 80,000 lbs for 10 . something hours when I would only drive 5 or 6 hours a day.
The weight should determine how many hours you should drive too.
But crack head pencil pushers who set the rules never been in a semi or a shipper or receiver all day.
For instance Wednesday I got to my receiver in groveport Ohio at 1:30 pm
My appt time was 3:30 at 8 they finally cut my seal.
They got me empty at 11:30. I had just enough time to get to flying J on I 70 just west of Columbus guess what no parking. So I had to be a buddy fucker and camp in the fuel island.
No hours to try to get to another safe haven.
Make more parking and stop charging for reserve parking. I spend enough at truck stops I shouldn’t have to pay to park.
Sorry just east of columbus
every trucker I know, myself included ,have gone up on the rates at least 40%.In some cases,100% for shorter runs.If you put a eld in your truck, and don`t go up on the rates, you are a sucker.
A lot of brokered loads on the load boards can`t be run legal anyway. Now if we go up on the detention and layovers we can force the brokers to pay us and the shippers/receivers to do a better job with the loading/unloading.Now is our chance to at least get more money
Eld is going to be a big pain in the wallet..traffic jams..eld is still on drive mod..chain up laws in the west..your travel time is cut in half pretty much…shippers and receivers..loading you late .or because your late due to the eld.now your wallet starts to get skinny..on drive mode on eld the clock doesnt slow down because you have to drive slower during chain up laes or stop and go for 2 or 3 hrs in early morning or 5 oclock traffic..
this Isn’t safe ! If someone is feeling sick or can’t sleep when it’s their time to shut down but then is exhausted when that dang computer says to goto work then that’s gonna cause wrecks. If you want to cause less wrecks let’s go to these big companies who have lobbied for this. I want to know how they are able to get Morbidly obese people who it is physically impossible to pass a physical and obtain a medical card.Yet they do ,and are dangerous to others on the road . I say this because I’ve seen a wreck where an extremely overweight driver had a heart attack wrecked hurting others . So I believe this should be addressed more than elds but that wouldn’t produce as much revenue as eld tickets probably. They need to meet half way figure out how to implement it to where we can pull over for a few hours and take a nap if needed without loosing all their time or pull over to wait out traffic!!!! And big thing quit letting truck driving schools turn out drivers that are not qualified . Why because the instructors prob went to driving school also and don’t know their butt from a hole in the ground either!!
In 15 years I have never encountered a dot or state police that we’re nothing but respectfull and polite it is all about respect you give it and you will receive it
I agree. Every encounter I’ve ever had has been pleasant. I think you have to “earn” disrespect from them by your own attitude and actions!
Well I done lost 2 loads this, week due to the ELD so who do I due for my losses .I’m going to see a lawyer today and see what I can do ..and to tell me what time to go to bed is really sad I’m not a kid .so who the hell they think they are .
The only way you lost is if you were illegal to start with !
Go see a lawyer so you might still be a illegal driver, great thinking !
You’re a worthless industry troll. Get a life you pos
You just entered the big man world. My advice is to keep it quite and learn. We don’t need your Swift, Prime, Werner opinion here. So STFU dude!
Werner has been doing it for 30 plus years and it works do not try to Buck the system try to understand it it will work for you
Amen. Another non driving big company employee. At least with paper logs you know if you get tired you can pull over and go to sleep.
That’s called falsification if you do that and log it “legal”… The problem with ELDs is they keep you from cheating. Might want to fight the real issue…. hours of service.
Bullshit, you clowns that think this eld is fine dont drive much.
I just had to “cheat”. Im sittin at the door. All i need to do is back in when they open. But i lost time in the snow last night.
My 8hr brake was Not over yet. Im out of hours.I STILL had to deliver my load at 0800 today. So… i had to go on personal convaince to back in. I unloaded” untarped and chains” then use pc to pull out. Now im sittin here “onduty pre trip unloading” waitin on an hour to go by.
Thats not leagle. When enough drivers are sittin at the con. But cant move the truck because of hours and have to reschedule then big changes will come.
I can move all over a customer facility or truck stop on “off duty” and it doesn’t change my duty status. Just figure out what it’ll do and what it won’t. They aren’t the best thing in the world but they really aren’t that bad. I view them as “lawyer slayers”… They just make it harder for a lawyer to make a living off you in case you run over somebody trying to get a mailbox check.
Yes we have to consult a lawyer and take this to the Supreme Court if need be- this eld is causing more problemes than it is resolving! For example according to DOT rules I am allowed to drive 11 hours in 1 day but with eld at the 10 th hour I am starting to worry about where I will park so I dont end up driving my alloted 11 hours thus losing money everyday! This is a burden to me and to my finances- If push comes to shove I will sue and I know I will win! But it s going to take patience and money to beat these criminals at FMSCA that are causing me so much stress!
Please do.
The truckers themselves don’t have enough money to back a real push.
The ooida is a joke and just did a pathetic push using an argument they knew would loose.
Crybaby
Better save your money. You’d get dismissed immediately …by the lawyer. The ELD isn’t the problem, the hours of service are. But you have been under the same ones for years… So basically you just admitted prior “falsification” of government documents. It’s like a drug dealer calling up the police and reporting somebody stole his drugs. Not the smartest thing to do…
Sherry,
There are a lot of cheaters running e-logs. Take a hard honest look. Inspection time. Waiting time. Sleeper berth. Off duty. Fueling. Talking or taking business from home or while off duty. The list goes on and on for technicalities. You are right about the HOS. The ELD compounds and gives reality to the righteousness to government control. Your trucking world is just as real and different as everyone else’s. That does not make one of us right and the other wrong. C’mon and understand we are people with feelings, emotions, senses. No computer or individual can define you.
Our Country has lasted 241 years on the premise of freedom, life and liberty based self government by individuals.
Not tyrannical, money grabbing, safety Nazis.
Drive until you get tired over extending hours of service being some where you’re not suppose to be & that iPhone You Tubing 4 wheeler hits you then the Po Po shows & that paper log can’t be cooked quick enough then you’re someone’s butt buddy in prison for vehicular homicide. Truck On!
I think eld could be ok with varying factors aloud and forgiveness for delays not caused by a driver. But then it would be all over the place. So. GET THEM OUT and focus on whats holding us up especially shippers and receivers ! Make it a law that when a driver makes his appointment within reasonable time the shipper has no more then 2 hours to finish loading. Give or take a few minutes , or by law must pay that driver 5 dollars a minute not by hour. Then we would see things improve and mite see drivers a little more eld friendly !!!
I’m loving it. I bought a 1999 Pete this summer so I’m picking up all the loads you guys are loosing.😁😂🤣😎
Amen. Old trucks just became worth their weight in gold.
AMEN! If I had to come out of retirement, I’d sure buy myself an old truck and a half dozen log books and make some money. Seriously I’d rather go on welfare than put up with the DOT bullcrap today, and they were MISERABLE in MY day.
It was hard enough making any money, spending half my life in loading docks watching Mexicans take siestas at the Piggly Wiggly.
And people wonder why all the trucking movies made in the 70s and 80s portrayed the dot officer or state trooper as a total prick
I have a 98. These trucks have gone up. Maybe I need to sell it and get out of trucking. Might be an opportunity here.
But they won’t let them in the container piers in NY, NJ,and CA.which is no problem. I rather be in the railyards anyway, less headache going in and out.
I don’t see how O/O’s are making it with the fuel prices going up along with the price gouging road techs on service calls. A friend of mine claims he made $140k a yr but after all expenses only brought home $24k..What’s that? Poverty level & for what? Just to say he’s in control going home when he wants & owns his own rig? Yeah Right!
And the rates should go up so between that and not having to buy DEF, you should be able to buy another pre-electronic engine by spring and hire and old school driver. Roll on big mamma!!
Ahhhhh. My 1995 FLD120 is looking better every day.
It’s communism right here where hero’s have died for freedom. America the Great…we will punish the most productively out society. We can’t allow hard working, sacrificing people to succeed. They become powerfully, can’t allow that threat. Sound famillar? Kinda like Jerusalem for the last 2000 years.
I’m going to work on this rule Until I sell my truck ect’ or It’s time to renew my reg.
Drivers who use paper RODS for not more than 8 days out of every 30-day period.
It will be enough to pay my insurence and keep me legal.
What time periods can be used to determine the 8 days in any 30-day period?
The 30-day period is not restricted to a single month, but applies to any 30-day period. For example, June 15 to July 15 is considered a 30-day period.
Just won’t do the ELDS then next is governors @ 62mph and what ever ATA tells the fmcs it requires Its not going to end here . Government does not represent the people.
For the old trucks…laugh now. Cry later when the system they come up with to force ELD compliance cost 3 times ad much. I know I haven’t been driving very long, but I don’t mind the Elog. Don’t have to calculate the HOS, it calculates exact times to the minute and it is easier than paper. Can’t figure how you could possibly have an error in the logbook anymore. Ergo, one less VIOLATION the DOT can gig you on. A company can not force you to drive more than you’re allowed…i bet that never happened before. Even in the short time I’ve been on the road i had it happen to me on more than one occasion. Saying all this, I don’t like anyone telling/mandating/forcing me to do something that came from erroneous information. Statistics can be made to say anything…liars use stays to prove their lies. Ladies and gentlemen please drive safe and have a Merry Christmas to you and your family. God’s peace to you
For an industry that’s been deregulated, truckers sure do have to abide by a lot of regulations.
Its time for me to get out of trucking. I’m not a o/o anymore with e logs
It’s causing parking problems big-time, running out of hours on side of the road, causing safety issues to four wheeler,s, companies are loosing lots of money, drivers making less, etc
I’ve been on the road for 37 years.. I’ve seen many things over the road. Most of the trouble I’ve seen is drivers from big companies with very little over the road training.then these newbes are put out there training other newbes..they have More training in paperwork then anything else. I think that if a individual that owns one truck shouldn’t have to be forced to ELD. Larger companies can afford this..it shouldn’t be required if a man or woman has 15 years or more of over the road experience. They should be exempt from this eld manadate..this should be set up for training purposes only. This would ensure that these newbes in this field have enough training.. this is supposed to be the land of the free.and Free Enterprise. What happened. ??
We are making money on elds. 20k this month. If you want to fight something, fight the hours of service rule, the original screw you created by the teamsters in the 30s to make sure truckers get paid for all the time they work, which has now turned to a needless restiction for us. All of you who are fighting the ELDs are just a bunch of LOG LIARS who want to keep lying because you cant get the job done by yourself. The real problem here is HOS RULES not how you record them!! Get a team mate and quit your bi+€hin!
The ELD mandate is only the beginning of other things to come. Next on the Fed’s hit list is cameras facing the driver.
I have been driving for 3 years, and can say that ELD is going to cause much more problems. Computer can not know when I am tired and put much higher preassure on me while driving.
I can’t sleep and wake up
When ELD sayd to me. My sleeping hours changed by shipping and receiving…
ELD is a killer. It will take long for some to get it but they will get statistics. Then like in Europe those morons in power will reduce speed limit for trucks way down like in Europe. But before there have to be a lot of exidents. DOT You will have blood on your hands for sure specialy near US Canada border. Iam on ELD for 2 weeks now same distance covered but never so tired before all my habits are screw up. This job sucs now and will be worse when we get cameras.
ELDS will not increase revenues! Like the examples of getting to a shipper or receiver only to sit for hours ON DUTY, if the Driver is not moving. They are not making money . Ithe means about a $30,000 drop a year not being able hide those hours I sit on duty. I am back hauling oil locally. Good riddance to OTR!!!
This site has fell into the hands of more than like company trolls with no constructive dialog to this subject and really should be booted off the site or at least watched and warned.
Back on subject, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim by the FMCSA that compliance really works however, the evidence that compliance leads to mored accidents is indeed out there in fact an 11% increase in accidents at the major carriers according to the ATA and I believe the FMCSA’s website and of course the FMCSA/DOT give the mega carriers a pass such as in the case of Walmart which they’ve gotten away with 100 people per year in the past and the FMCSA says it’s OK since they are a mega fleet with a lot of miles under their belt it’s not so bad. I guess they can say that since they’re not dead.
What drivers can do is stand in front of Walmart and protest their hypocrisy so the world can see who’s more dangerous to the public with signs stating there numbers of kills.
The fact is no one can control something as fluid as sleep I don’t care if we a chip in our right hand or not it cannot be controlled because that’s the way nature wired each of us as individuals not FMCSA government born children, some are day people some are night some are in between.
And yes I will expose you hypocrites too! I had an elog back when Dart was experimenting on us to see if this garbage worked and they didn’t tell the government it didn’t nor did I waste time telling them that I almost fell asleep 3 times in that 62 mph truck and no I don’t have any sleep issues whatsoever.
Many of you will be forced to drink stimulants and run outside your true cycle, remember these laws were created to benefit corporations not people first!
If you work for anyone or any company they still control you and can correct these logs even if you do put real time info on that log which most of you don’t but should (which is cheating by way of loopholes) and the DOT will be looking for these little games some people are playing and will warn you the first time next time you’ll learn and it won’t be pretty either!
Stretch squeeze all you want and get into a fatality accident and we’ll see who gets the last laugh especially since many of these shippers have cameras too.
You think your on duty time doesn’t count just give it time you may be the lucky winner to get a all expenses paid trip to see Bubba one day and you’ll get a chance to laugh for free for the next 5 years.
Does this protect you in some cases? Sure it does unless some really hot Prosecutor wants your big mouth smart know it all attitude rear-end behind bars.
No matter how you guys slice it this isn’t good for drivers. Lawyers yes drivers no….
Meanwhile, the state of California has just proposed a law requiring all vehicles on the road. (Private as well as commercial) be required to have an electronic loggi g device onboard. Current preferred method is your cell phone
God !!what want the governor I have prepass, rfid ,my smart phone, what ever I move this people know where I’m + now E log????
elogs would never have happened if we didnt have truckers not take time and sleep. Instead they wanted to run for 20 hours before sleeping or take amphetamines or snort coke to stay awake and run for 40 hrs straight…something does need to be done concerning the whole delay at shippers and the lack of truck parking…but elogs didnt come along for no reason..
Know your enemy it’s the big 4 companies that pushed for it due to they know they get all the loads smaller companies can not haul due to the eld they can relay every load they get so in the end they make more while the little guy goes out of business
It’s not the governments job to tell me how to operate my business this is like telling office workers they have to go out and by a MacBook because it’s the law. This is a ludicrous waste of time money and added stress much like the new California compliant tractors. Because we all know those are working just great
Maybe if drivers shut down right where they are on the highways for their 30 min, 10 hr, and 34 hr “safety breaks” in order to stay compliant and not be in violation would get the point across…
Why don’t all of you quit complaining! There are other issues to be worrying about than a electronic logbook!
DOT said eld would save 29 lives a year. Guess what, seeing drivers trying to beat the clock in every situation , you will see a massive increase in deaths because of this law. And I bet DOT will be scratching their collective heads on why? Fools.
ZED ELD. The site was experiencing lots of traffic the first day – that appeared to be a surprise to the other person on their help line. They hinted that it was the fault of the drivers who didn’t already have the device. Their user manual refers drivers to watch YouTube videos to learn the system. The videos weren’t posted until November 29, 2017. Their complaint that drivers had two years to do this….. well, so did they.
These ELD marketers are using drivers as guinea pigs for their untested software. They know they don’t work right, and just are having drivers call and call and call with the problems they are having, then try to tweak them until they do work. They know full well that drivers who buy their product will most likely be “out of compliance”.
This company has user manuals. The information is very basic. There is no troubleshooting section in the manual. If there are problems you are supposed to call their help line number. The help line is only open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday. You wait at the very least 1/2 hour to talk to someone. The message while you wait used to tell you to leave a number so they can call you back “shortly”. It now just says to email them and they’ll get back to you. They don’t.
The transponder disconnects periodically. The driver has to watch for that and correct it right away on the tablet. While driving, evidently. Oh- the driver can pull over to the side of the road to do this. (that could be a problem on many busy freeways). When problems are reported, the first recommendation is to update the “firmware” by downloading it again to the tablet. Then it needs about a half hour to….. firm up I guess. When it is done, the driver is supposed to pull over to the side of the road and reconnect the device and the tablet.
All of our bodies are different, you may need more sleep/rest to get back to 100% than the next person. You may be able to change your sleep and eating cycle much easier than the next person. However, for me ,I need time to adjust; I can’t tell my body it’s time to sleep and then fall over in a deep sleep! HOS will change your cycle, whereas ,you run paper or eld , lve ran both. Maybe, if the rules was changed so that when you’re waiting to load or unload or stopped to set down for a good home cooked meal, not count against the 14. What about 12 or 13 driving and 16 on? We as professional drivers know when we’re tired, hungry or just need a break from the stupid out there with us! “Race that clock “,(that doesn’t stop once you start the 14! ) I don’t have time for any delays! There will be drivers that run illegal regardless, either by situations or purposely. I don’t need nor want the government to tell me when to sleep or eat! Sometimes,a good nap would be a welcome but, what time is it? I would hope that these “rule makers” will have been professional drivers for several years , before making rules for us to follow. I don’t pretend to have the “answer ” ,I just know that they’re days ,that I can get more done than other days and not be as tired. Many of the rules are not in the best interest of safety nor for one to make a decent livingbut ,together ,surly we can send letters or posts to your reps inorder to get things changed (the squeaky bearing gets the grease).
I really don’t care what they do. I have been a company owner for 20yrs and the only problem I have with the new law is enforcement. For instance, Texas chooses not to enforce the law if you have state tags. It will be 2 more yrs before they do anything which will keep the rates low and cause unfair competition. I just need the rules to apply to everyone, not slowly applied so they can strangle small companies out.
Well I have been on the road for 36 yrs..I am an owner operator leased to a small company.I did get the ELD in my truck.I do not like it one bit. They say that it makes you more efficient.Well I beg to differ. The first week I lost 2000.00 in revenue. The second week Iost another 2000.00.
The reason was I could not make my delivery on time.If I still had paper logs I would have been able to make delivery on time. And please I never abused my paper log I slept every night.I did not run 18 or 20 hrs. A day.
But at least with paper you can compress your day to give yourself more drving time.Anyway I am home now for Christmas am selling my truck and got a local job.You can have those ELD,s and shove them where the shn don’t shine.
ELD’s… this trucking sux
Pretty soon all we will have driving these trucks will be foreigners, such a garbage job.
Who would want to put up with this nonsense ?
I have a feeling food prices are going to go through the roof. That in itself could get some attention on the whole ELD thing. Mess with something that really effects the general public, and somebody up in DC will hiding under there desk. Just give it time, this whole thing may just back fire in the right direction.
