New Projects to Help Truck Drivers on I-4
Florida is investing in new infrastructure to help truck drivers and reduce traffic on Interstate 4 (I-4) between Orlando and Tampa. Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced two major projects: more truck parking and new express lanes.
The state plans to add 100 new truck parking spaces in Polk County and build 17 miles of express lanes in Hillsborough County. These improvements aim to make travel safer, reduce congestion, and improve freight movement along one of Florida’s busiest freight corridors.
Polk County Truck Parking Expansion
The new truck parking area will be located near the Polk Parkway and I-4 interchange. It’s expected to open by fall 2027. The state will use existing land and invest $500 million from its budget surplus to complete the project.
This expansion is much needed. The I-4 corridor has only 90 public truck parking spaces right now, while more than 18,000 trucks use this route every day.
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Jared Perdue said the project will boost local jobs and benefit the economy. “Every dollar we invest in transportation returns $4.26 to the local economy,” Perdue said.
Express Lanes Coming to Hillsborough County
FDOT is also accelerating plans to build 17 miles of express lanes from Interstate 75 to County Line Road. The lanes will separate local and long-distance traffic, helping reduce backups and travel times.
Construction is expected to begin by 2028, ten years earlier than originally scheduled. Governor DeSantis said the effort is part of the state’s Moving Florida Forward program, which aims to complete critical infrastructure projects faster.
More Parking Projects on the Way
FDOT is planning more improvements across the I-4 corridor, including 1,400 additional truck parking spaces. One facility already under construction in Hillsborough County will add 160 new parking spaces when it opens in late 2026.
This 49-acre site will cost $29.4 million and include new traffic signals, better lane layouts, and upgraded lighting to improve safety and access for truckers.
Technology to Help Truckers Find Parking
Both new facilities will use the Truck Parking Availability System, which lets drivers check for open spaces in real time through apps and roadside signs.
According to FDOT’s 2023 Truck Parking Study, about 75% of freight in Florida moves by truck. Yet public facilities only provide 30% of total parking, with the rest coming from private truck stops.
By adding new parking and road improvements, Florida hopes to reduce congestion, improve safety, and support the trucking industry that keeps its economy moving.
