A former employee at a CDL school in Mississippi was fired from his job in 2014, but didn’t stop issuing CDL paperwork. Now he’s pled guilty to aggravated identity theft for selling the paperwork to applicants who wanted to receive a CDL without actually earning it.
After he was fired, Derrious Dillon obtained a list of names and ID numbers for authorized CDL instructors in the state. Using that information, he was able to prepare fraudulent paperwork for anyone who had the money to pay.
According to a Department of Justice press release, Dillon was paid between $200 and $400 for each set of paperwork. People were then able to use that to get their CDLs. In interviews with some of those involved, authorities discovered that some people had never actually bothered taking the test, but received their CDLs anyway.
Dillon is scheduled to be sentenced to on April 10th, 2018. He faces a maximum of two years in prison and fines up to $250,000.
“These types of crimes endanger our children, our families and the public at large on our roadways,” said U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst according to the DOJ press release. “When a person chooses to exchange our safety for their personal benefit, they will be prosecuted and held accountable. I commend our law enforcement partners for their excellent work to ensure our roads are and remain safe.”
