A Texas trucker is garnering headlines for completing a rare industry feat. H-E-B truck driver Danny Guerrero Jr. recently reached the milestone of transporting goods and materials over 4 million miles without an accident or receiving a traffic violation.
According to officials at the supermarket chain, only one other employee has reached the mark. The company was aware of his unblemished track record and Guerrero was greeted by friends, family members, and colleagues when he pulled into an H-E-B warehouse in San Antonio.
“This is unbelievable,” Guerrero reportedly said. “I didn’t expect it. I started at 21 years old. It’s something you get used to and if you like it, you’re going to hang onto it.”
He reportedly got his foot in the company’s door in 1979 as a warehouse worker. Within two years, his work ethic landed him a position as a full-time driver. H-E-B now ranks among the largest supermarkets in the U.S. and has upwards of 350 locations, primarily in Texas and northern Mexico. The organization reportedly possesses a fleet of nearly 600 tractors and more than 2,800 trailers, making it the 76th largest private fleet in the U.S.
Guerrero was reportedly inducted into the H-E-B Truck Driver Hall of Fame in 1994 and named H-E-B Driver of the Year in 2010. During his 40-year career as a CDL professional with the company, Guerrero averaged 100,000 miles annually. That statistic would be the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe upwards of 160 times. Given that Guerrero is only the second H-E-B driver to reach the milestone 4 million miles without an accident or injury highlights the difficulty of the achievement.
“We are super grateful, proud, and thankful for his many years of service and for the standard he set in the profession,” H-E-B Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Logistics Carson Landsgard reportedly said. “It takes individuals like Danny to take the bar and set it high. In certain professions, there are individuals who are superstars, who you admire and respect for doing the impossible. Danny gets to be in that elite status today.”
