Hyundai Motor is teaming up with FirstElement Fuel to test Hyundai’s Xcient fuel cell heavy-duty trucks in California. FirstElement’s True Zero hydrogen refueling stations will fuel the prototypes at 700 bar pressure. Their mobile refueler (developed with Taylor-Wharton and Nikkiso) can refuel at 125 kg/hr.
FirstElement Fuel’s Class A licensed drivers are piloting three Xcient Fuel Cell trucks on routes throughout California, covering over 25,000 miles with zero emissions. The company has performed over 120 hydrogen fills and supplies liquid hydrogen for storage and distribution. This enables large quantities of hydrogen to fuel Class 8 FCEV trucks efficiently. The True Zero network of hydrogen refueling stations will fuel the prototypes at full 700 bar pressure.
Later this year, FirstElement Fuel and Hyundai Motor will launch the world’s largest commercial deployment of Class 8 hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks in Oakland, CA. Jointly funded by the California Energy Commission and the California Air Resources Board and managed by the Center for Transportation and the Environment, the NorCAL Zero project provides data and learnings to design considerations.
According to FirstElement Fuel CEO Joel Ewanick, the partnership with Hyundai confirms the potential for fuel cell technology to meet transport and logistics needs with zero emissions. FirstElement Fuel Inc is a California-based company established in 2013 to provide safe, reliable retail hydrogen to customers of fuel cell electric vehicles.
