In a dramatic and life-saving rescue, two Macomb County sheriff’s deputies in Michigan came to the aid of a driver experiencing a medical emergency while driving down a busy highway. The incident, which took place on September 12, was captured on bodycam footage and has earned widespread praise for the deputies’ bravery and quick actions.
The driver, a 63-year-old man, was spotted driving erratically at about 5 mph along Gratiot Avenue in Mount Clemens. His silver truck was swerving across the road, creating a dangerous situation for other motorists. Deputies Nicole Miron and Anthony Gross were dispatched to the scene and quickly caught up to the slow-moving vehicle. In the footage, Deputy Miron can be seen climbing into the moving truck through its open window to assist the unresponsive driver.
With Gross behind the wheel of the patrol car, Miron managed to carefully climb from the passenger side of their vehicle and into the passenger seat of the truck. “Stay there,” she instructed the dazed driver before taking control of the vehicle, asking him, “You good? You OK? Is this park?” Her swift actions allowed her to safely stop the truck, preventing a potential collision in the busy intersection they were approaching.
Speaking to ABC’s Good Morning America, Miron explained that the driver appeared to be in a daze and was clearly suffering from a medical condition. “When we pulled up next to him, you could see he kind of looks over at us — he’s in, like, a daze, confused,” she said. Fortunately, a concerned citizen had been following the vehicle and reporting its location to authorities, helping the deputies locate the truck quickly.
Deputy Gross, who was focused on safely maneuvering the patrol car through traffic, recalled the intensity of the moment. He expressed concern about keeping both themselves and the driver safe while navigating the heavy traffic in the area. “I was worried about trying to keep him safe and us safe,” Gross said. “With the heavy traffic in the area, and trying to stay as close as I could so that we could handle [the] situation.”
As the truck neared a busy intersection, the urgency to stop the vehicle intensified. Miron’s decision to act quickly helped avoid a potentially disastrous outcome. “I want to get him stopped before we entered that area, because I didn’t know if he could hit somebody else, or they wouldn’t see him and hit him,” she explained.
Thanks to their efforts, the driver was safely brought to a stop and immediately received the medical attention he needed. According to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, the driver has since recovered and is now home and doing well.
Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham praised Deputies Miron and Gross for their actions, stating, “I’m proud of both of the deputies for their actions. I consider them heroes.” The successful rescue highlights the courage and quick thinking of the deputies, who managed to avert a potential disaster on the highway while ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
This high-stakes rescue serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role law enforcement officers play in responding to emergency situations and protecting the public, often putting themselves at risk in the process.
