Mathis is a mid-sized city positioned on the Gulf Coast of Texas, approximately 40 miles from Corpus Christi and 140 miles from San Antonio. With a population under 5,000 in 2010, the city is known as a small ranching community with strong connections to many small and mid-sized cities in the area.
You could say there isn’t much going on in Mathis, but there is something new popping up toward the end of next year: A new TA Express out on the highway.
TravelCenters of America has officially announced plans to open the TA Express on I-37 with a projected opening in the fourth quarter of 2022. TA isn’t alone in expanding its network in recent years. Love’s also launched an aggressive plan for expansion, starting in 2021.
Benefits of Truck Stop Expansions
As the nation’s economy struggles to come back to life after major shutdowns in 2020, now is the perfect time for truck stops like Love’s and TA to expand operations. There are some benefits to come from these plans:
- Truck drivers will have a wider variety of accommodations while on the road.
- Gas, food, and bathrooms will become more accessible to all motorists on the highway.
- Small and mid-sized towns like Mathis, Texas, should receive some economic benefits due to business generated by new truck stops.
- New truck stops create jobs for those in the construction industry and later for locals serving as employees to keep the stations in operation.
What Will the Mathis TA Express Offer?
For drivers passing through southern Texas, the new TA Express in Mathis will offer the following amenities:
- 6 diesel fueling stations
- CAT scale
- About 100 truck parking spots
- 6 showers
- Driver’s lounge
- Laundry facilities
- 2 fast food options
The new truck stop will also offer parking spaces and fueling spaces for non-commercial vehicles.

Mathis??? Of all the places this could of had been built, they chose Mathis?! C’mon man!
There’s places in and around Austin alone that desperately need truckstops and parking for such a demanding area with stupidly rapid growth.
