Just because the ELD deadline got pushed last time, doesn’t mean driver should expect it to be pushed again. That’s according to FMCSA officials who say that the deadline to switch from AOBRDs to ELDs will be staying right where it is.
Speaking at the EROAD conference last week, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s head of enforcement Joe DeLorenzo told listeners that the December 16th compliance deadline wouldn’t be flexible.
This follows rumors that the industry might see ‘soft enforcement’ similar to what happened as the ELD mandate first went into effect back in January of 2018. It also comes as FMCSA Administrator Ray Martinez announced that he would be stepping down from his post – a move which came as a surprise and led some to believe that policy and enforcement timelines might be delayed.
No such luck for those still using AOBRDs though. According to DeLorenze, “everyone has to be prepared.”

SFM worldwide says
The FMCSA and the federal government just out to screw the trucking industry. All in the name of so called bs saftey. Elds are making it less safe. In fact lot more accidents are accruing do to the ELD.
Robert says
Actually eld isn’t the reason for more crashes. Speed is the reason. Drivers claim they have to race the clock. You don’t have to race the clock if you get a load with more time on it.
ELD is here to stay so get used to it. Federal government knew guys on paper were running illegal and couldn’t prove it.
Most on paper called it a comic book or coloring book. I’ve heard of some doing the log in crayons.
So there you go.
Milo Novak says
Customers shippers and recievers are still keeping bs loading and unloading times, someone need to change their mindset…. ELD is OK but they are not OK
Samuel Gallezzo says
The only companies and drivers asking for a delay are the one cheating the system now. There’s nothing wrong with ELDs.
Alec Federico says
Only lazy drivers support ELD. I don’t know any single owner operator who’s happy with ELD. I haul reefer and it’s so hard to make it legal because of loading/unloading time. Why shippers receivers don’t care about your HOS? In my case it’s their fault. And I feel more tired since ELD enforced. You speeding to catch hours, you more angry because of hours.
Ks says
ELD kills get it finally.
Jeff Pearson says
Very few were lying on their paper log books before..except because of brokers who think you can go coast to coast in a day and a half..and dont be late..
James says
I’m a 25 year trucker and I can tell you that EVERY OTR driver cheated on their paper logs. You had no choice, companies not only expected it, they demanded it. So stop with the bs already! I’m not saying ELD’s will solve the problem. Because now we’ve got drivers being forced to drive tired and sleepy. When that 14 hour clock starts, that’s it. If you spend 30 minutes on a drop & hook, then 2 hours getting loaded, then factor in the required 30 minute break, that leaves 11 hours to get your 11 hours driving in. Doesn’t matter if you are tired, sleepy, sick, etc. then after you deliver, spend another hour in the dock, you are out of hours and being told you can’t stay there, you have to leave the facility. So you drive out of hours to a truck stop and there’s no place to park. The liability is all on the driver. We are the first sacrificial lamb any time there is a problem. Even today, a company will tell a driver with a flat tire to drive the truck to a shop, 100% illegal. If the driver refuses, they get rid of him. If he complies and gets stopped, he gets the ticket. Trucking is a lose/lose proposition for the driver. Always has been, always will be. If I’m legally parked and someone hits me, the first thing that happens is I am drug tested. If a load is late, for reasons beyond my control, that’s a strike against me with the company. Two late loads and I’m fired. Why? Because then the company can tell their customers it was my fault, not theirs. I know it makes no sense for a company to fire a good driver. But they do it every day because drivers are easier to replace than customers. A carrier will fire their 3 best drivers each week as long as their customer is buying into the lies that it was those drivers, not the carrier, that caused the late loads. That’s how it works. And no ELD or regulation is going to fix that. Drivers only deal with docks and security guards, they never get to meet the actual customer and tell them the truth about why the load was late. The carrier takes care of that. And the first thing they do is blame the driver.
Marilyn Houdek says
I think they’re less safe because I’m always trying to beat the clock. I’m doing things that I normally wouldn’t have done. besides I don’t know how the ELD knows when I’m tired and when I’m not. I’m old enough and responsible enough to sleep when I’m tired.
Dennis sell says
I agree I have useing it for 4years and it works for me. Quick crying and get use to it.
Robert says
Aobrd you can’t cheat the system. There are some minor difference between the two but it’s still electronic. Main difference is how logs are delivered to enforcement. Aobrd doesn’t access erods. That’s why we are all changing over.
Larry says
Everyone is not the same. I drive to my strengths. I am a night owl. In summer I drive all night when cooler, less traffic. I park outside a major city @6-7am and sleep till @10am (depending on traffic rush hour) get in, get out.. Have a good meal and a nap. When I wake up I go. If I have to wait two more hours before I’m supposed to go. I dont get any rest.
I would rather drive when conditions are good, rest when I feel tired. Naps 7-10am and 4-6 pm ( I seldom sleep to alarm)
There may be times I am two hrs from home and my book says I’m tired. But I’m not. Let me get home, spend few hours with family, then sleep.
I could buy a 35’+ 5th wheel camper behind pickup and drive cost to coast only stopping for fuel. People who seldom drive more then 2 hours a day in a car can legally hop in a 10k lb truck, hook a HUGE camper on back. Overload it toward doors. (The load needs to be distributed???) and load kids, dog and try to drive 10 hours after a normal work day. But it’s legal.
Big Wheel says
Exactly, I have always said this about RV’S what the hell , this country has become stupid!! Again i say, Everyone needs to stand down for 2 weeks, thats it, but the dumb ones keep taking 1/mile loads!!
Trokerito says
Samuel Gallezzo, sometimes I wonder why broker think truck drivers are so stupid ….. you are a clear example .
Zion Gatez says
Uncle Tom’s come in all flavors I see.
Marco polo says
Has to be optional.if you fill like you’re ok,fine, all dependents in the circumstances.ones you got a rout round trips, one an one good for you,but what happens when you have five pickups and five drops, lets be conscience.
Jeff Pearson says
If you want to get rid of the ELD..1..you can have a major shut down..screwing up the works..but that hasnt happened in the past because everybody is only out for ME…OR 2 you get a good lawyer and take it to court.. you already have the facts and figures of the rise in fatalities..and tell them that the fmcsa regulation is harmful to your health and everybody in the motoring public..
Kato says
Damn Pearson I’ve been screaming that for that past year. That’s all it takes is for us to do that them Elds would get tossed right out
Marc says
Don’t forget Sammy’s probably getting government money to make up for the loss in wages.
MGJ says
You people whining about ELDs need to get over it…they are not going away.
The Hours of Service are what needs to be modified.
Spin it any way you want…those who bitch about ELDs were lying/cheating when they were using paper logs.
Go ahead and call it “flexibility” if you want…it was still illegal.
Rather than constant whining about it, learn to work within the constraints of thhe ELD.
Lester says
When they first started the brokers let us do what we needed to do to be legal. Towards the end of 2018 they started pushing me just like before on a $3500 load they sent a confirmation for $3100 and $400 for on time delivery. If I complained they took me off the load. I finally had enough and I had put up with the BS For 50+ years I retired.
Scott says
HOS when you drive OTR means you can’t sleep any no normal restfull way
Commonly… less than 60 minutes from destination and 10 0r 34 hrs…
This is just absurd…
Sleeping when you can’t causes even more STRESS…..
Tim Carr says
I believe if they pulled the records on the Acident’s sense they started E logs verses when we could us paper logs . They have had more Acident sense E logs came in affect . Than when drivers was us paper logs . At when you had paper logs you could stop and get a nape if you been sitting at a shipper for hours . A lot of drivers like me get up to run can’t get a nape cause they have done got wide awake. But knowing they can pull over and take a couple hour nape if they do get tired and drive several miles before getting tied verses your clock is still running you can’t stop it when you have 7 hours to drive and done used up your time on your 14 hour is the same as your drive time so if you do get tired and it’s going to take you 7 hours to get there and you only have 7 to drive most drivers got a time or appointment they got to be at to get unloaded so they can pick up there next load at say 6:00 am the next day . But clock want let you leave till 7am the next day . But you made your unload time say at 10pm that night you could leave earlier on paper logs but can’t leave till 8:00am on E Logs your late now may not get that load now you got to get dispatch to find another load now but now you have started your E logs clock time is clicking once again no way to stop it . Your getting tired now you get another load pick it up got a 9 hour run to get there but same as before 9 hours to drive 9 left on 14 hour day race the clock you in a hurry also now where what you do
Sarge says
I sleep well with my loose leaf logs and 2015 Glider.
Lester says
It will be over soon enjoy it while you can. You are like the kid that waited till everyone else ate their snickers then started waving theirs around. Very childish.
Joe says
Running Aoboard is like running paper logs, can cheat all day long
Dan says
Really well tell the world how about
Isabella Kirby says
The company I drive for has implemented the ELD. It sucks a HUGE one. Can’t go over 5 mph or it’s on drive, so I have to creep away from the fuel pump to the line. It clicks off every second. Burnt 30 sec pulling up to the line and learned my lesson quickly.
If I get to a DC like Walmart I better dang well have time left on my 14, otherwise I’m needing to creep along or used PC.
That’s a whole other story there.
What I’m saying is that I am driving a whole lot harder because of playing Beat the Clock with the cursed ELD mandate. AOBRD’s at least gave a driver the chance to save drive time, move about at a customer or terminal easier, and let the driver be less stressed. No wonder there is more wrecks. More drivers falling asleep or having sudden heart attacks. All because of ignorant government officials who have never worked as a truck driver, therefore they don’t know and will never understand the reality of our profession. They will only know what the researchers tell them.
I’m sorry this is so long.
Randy says
I’m going to retire soon!!!
Tired of all the crap to complicated
Today not enough pay for the liability
We face & the home time we lose
So be careful what you wish for
Dan says
It’s simple, Every time there’s a natural disaster, bad storm, cold snap, the first thing the mayor or governor does is suspend DOT rules so the trucks can bring in supplies!!! Why? Cuz they know the rules are BS and have nothing to do with safety.
Governor Ross says
I totally agree. So in a major catothropic event Dam the govt (FEMA)stick by the rules (10hrs/14) let the army Navy Marines get the supplies there
Patrick McMichael says
Hey all you that think it’s the federal government doing this…you vote for the politicians that are passing this crap…they are doing what the ATA wants…it’s called monopoly….An not sharing the wealth…Do some research an you will see owner of maverick bragging about how much they spent to get what they wanted…governor is next..then they have full control of the truck the freight an wages….Stop voting for lieing, stealing politicians…..
Lester says
Who are you going to vote for they are all like just different party hats.
TEA says
I AGREE THAT THE ELD IS ALL ABOUT MONEY IM ON THE ROAD EVERYDAY THE TRUCK DRIVERS HAVE TO DOGE CARS THE WHOLE 500 MILES FROM RECKLESS SPEEDING DRIVERS NOT BEING INSENSITIVE TO FAMILIES WARE THE TRUCK DRIVER WAS AT FAULT SAFETY?!!!!!!!!!
TEA says
TRUCK DRIVERS FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD NEED TO STAND TOGETHER. WE MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND THEY SAY MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND AND WE HAUL THAT TOO. MAYBE WE SHOULD DO MORE? THE MAJORITY ALWAYS WINS!!!!!
Lonnie says
Great comments on here,But does anyone know where I can get a Texas Dedicated run with a Company out of Ohio?
RICKY H says
Elds, are not safe….accidents are more frequent, I see drivers racing the clock daily…..it was tried in the 70s ,it didn’t work the….it doesn’t work now…….if hard work isnt for you .,trucking isn’t either
Dan Cox says
Truck drivers should play this mess like the game it is. 1st- find a temp service in your city and apply and only take hourly paying jobs. I saw this happening when DOT set it up to change years ago. I make $25-$30 an hour regardless if the wheels turn or not. Stop waiting to get screwed or your company to go out of business and start doing the screwing and maximize your position in the game.
Oliver says
The best way is to have every owner operator to only book a load with a very good rate and owner ops or small fleet should stop booking cheap loads Second government should also regulate freight brokers agent on there commission kind of like real estate agent haha
