Every year, CVSA International Roadcheck runs for three days, inspecting tens of thousands of commercial trucks in North America. This year, 12,254 trucks were placed out of service along with 3,247 drivers.
Roadcheck was postponed from its normal time in May due to COVID-19. Instead, it ran from September 9th through the 11th. Over three days, 50,151 inspections were conducted throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The vast majority are conducted by Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance-certified inspectors in the U.S.
During the 50,151 inspections, 12,254 vehicles were placed out of service for equipment violations. That’s a 24.4% OOS rate. The most common violations were over brake systems (3,163), tires (2,326), lights (1,650), cargo securement (1,586), and brake adjustment (1,567).
In addition, 3,247 drivers were placed out of service for failing to meet requirements. Drivers were most commonly put out of service for Hours of Service violations (1,128); “other” including moving violations, cell phone use, etc (709); driving with the wrong class license (687); false logs (455); and driving with a suspended license (141).

Get out of the scale houses and onto the back roads you’ll catch lot more than you have ever been able to. Especially Dump Trucks and Trash Trucks.

That’s just the way it is nowadays every day I see more reckless driving than I have in 43 years of truck driving.

I’m confused by the brake adjustment category. %90 of trucks are running automatic slacks these days that don’t need to be adjusted. If they are out of adjustment, there’s an issue in the slack, pushrod, brake pot, or drum/brake lining. As a journeyman tech when I read “out of adjustment” my first thought is…what’s causing the brakes to be out of adjustment…just something I noticed and a random thought…ENJOY!!

I would like to see the breakdown of how many of these drivers are foreigners.

Suspended licenses ? Hours of service? I thought we all had big brother watching. . . . My ELD tells me when to stop and take a leak 🤔 I guess you can just ignore it . . . Huh

Prior to Covid, I drove for a small company, owned by Eastern Europeans, that had poorly maintained vehicles…at least mine was.
Most of the vehicles were O/O… but they figured by owning a few trucks they could make even more.
Insisting on vehicle repairs put me on their shyt list for sure. They refused to replace cracked windshields…Tires were seldom new. On average I had one a week come apart.
The Owner of the company was about 30 years old and with no driving experience.
My “dispatcher” was 22 years old and had only driven his dad’s truck on the farm “back home”. It was a 1099 company and operated out of a semi-condemned building on a couple of laptop computers.
“Fly-by-night” would have been a compliment…

With the need for good drivers, Working for that CO. more then a week was totally your fault…I’m a 30 yr, retired driver that refused to dodge weigh stations due to over weight, drive illegally in any form , or operate an unsafe vehicle.
One time I was ask not to cash a check till the following Monday.
Cashed it on Mon.and and never showed,,
I found mostly dumb dispatchers and Ma and Pa outfits were first to play these games(In my experience) so I stayed with the big outfits Like Ryder, Conway, U.P.S.

That’s where you arrange to have a friend or family member pick you up at the scalehouse, then pull in and ASK to be inspected

I wish I had thought of that.
It DID inspire me to purchase my own truck, a used Kenworth T2000.
Just bought an In-frame kit and new virgin tires, all around for it.

Time find another carrier to drive for.
Nobody is worth driving for, who doesn’t maintain the equipment to keep you & the public safe so you can return home to your family!

Not saying the trucks and drivers placed OOS weren’t done properly, I am just wondering how many four wheelers would be placed OOS if their vehicles, and drivers, were inspected according to the same criteria. How many states have aggressive truck inspection programs but fight every effort or suggestion of a similar program for their residents’ vehicles? How many two car collisions are caused by equipment failure? How many car/truck collisions are caused by the car’s equipment failure? Everyone on the road should have to meet the same standards.

I agree with you on that, you see vehicles without mirrors, lights and hell even bumpers. I want to see the violations for them being brought up. No insurance, no license, they would make a killing and probably save more lives. Just a thought.

Wreckless driving is the norm on any highway. Drivers especially young ppl. are having their brains conforming to the reptilian syndrome which means fight or flight like a lizards brain and other species. Their brain tells them they have to hav what they want fast. They get frustrated, and are out of control. It’s due to years of radiation from the phones. Case in point…in the late 70’s a newborn had a one in 2500 of being born with autism. Today its one in 68. Remarkable. The radiation penetrates the fetus. This danger of radiation increases and only gets worse. The FCC has hidden any danger from the public due to big communications companies power over this govt. agency. Now the FCC is being sued. Google it for yourself. In 40 years who knows what consequences will come from excessive phone use held close to one’s body. We just don’t know yet. I’ve even passed a slow moving truck that was watching a movie. A driver trying to text with his arms between the steering wheel going 35mph on I-75 in tenn. Madness. Do your own research. Companies have to do a better job of controlling cell phones in a truck. Texting is deadly. Most politicians are influenced by Att and the others thru campaign contributions. Peace
