Trucking is full of great people and while competition is fierce among manufacturers, fleets, parts distributors, dealers and repair garages, collaboration is also common. Since early in the history of the industry, trucking has faced many challenges (e.g. consolidation in the ’80s, emissions regulations in the ’90s, economic challenges in the ’00s and now carbon-free freight movement, to name a few) but mostly risen above them through collaboration; sometimes requiring compromise from both sides in order to move forward.
Most drivers are convinced that electric and hydrogen trucks are coming fast and that successfully deploying them at scale might be the biggest challenge we as an industry have faced and will potentially face in the reasonable future.
We must collaborate to achieve a zero-emissions future, involving utilities, charging infrastructure providers, connectivity developers, and more. We must educate them about the trucking industry, but also be open to learning about their challenges.
Together, we can adapt and overcome the challenges to come, and build an industry that continues to serve our country and our future generation. A smooth transition to zero-emission vehicles must offer something for everyone, requiring new forms of collaboration. If history is any indication, we will be successful at overcoming this new challenge.
