Media outlets and click-bait platforms too often subscribe to the notion that “if it bleeds, it leads.” Applying that mindset to the trucking news has sullied the good name of men and women who deliver 72 percent of America’s goods and materials. Truckers shepherded the country through dark times and the vast majority continue to serve as hard-working examples worthy of admiration. These are examples of what everyday truck drivers do behind the scenes.
Truckers Buoy Maine Town During Drought
The town of Stonington, Maine, has a modest population just north of 1,000 and residents rely on annual tourism. Located on Deer Island south of Bar Harbor, a persistent drought recently threatened the influx of summer tourists who flock to the coast.
In mid-July, town officials ordered 64,000 gallons of drinking water to meet vacationer demand. This marks the second time Stonington leaders needed to have water trucked in due to drought and a growing number of tourists straining supplies.
“They can’t pump water out of something that’s not there,” Kathleen Billings, Stonington town manager, reportedly said. “The rain that we got just wasn’t enough.”
During the summer of 2021, the town ordered upwards of 400,000 gallons. In the backdrop of the crisis, truck drivers have met weekly demand for the second year in a row. Headlines may focus on the drought problem, but truckers are the solution.
Tow Truck Driver Pulls Constable From Fiery Crash
In Texas, a Harris County Precinct 8 constable was recently released from the hospital after her patrol car slammed into a concrete barrier and exploded into flames. The incident was reportedly captured on video surveillance footage and a tow truck driver likely saved the officer’s life.
Local reports indicate the officer was stopped on the shoulder of the East Beltway near San Augustine. A vehicle slammed into the rear of the patrol car at 2 am, and it caught fire while the constable was incapacitated. Thanks to a tow truck driver in the right place at the right time, she suffered only 10 staples to her head and is expected to make a full recovery.
“As soon as the boom, you saw the fire and flames. I banged on the window, and then all of a sudden, I see a hand coming out from the smoke where they had the airbag, the side airbag. Her hand came out from around it, and I noticed her bright fingernails. I punched the glass with my fist, couldn’t break it, ran back to my tow truck, grabbed a trailer hitch, ran back out there, and I smashed the window out with the trailer hitch,” tow truck operator Richard Borgstrom reportedly said. “I wasn’t about to just leave her in there and let her die.”
